Exeter Guildhall to turn red for World Leukaemia Day
Landmarks across the UK are set to light up red to raise awareness of leukaemia this September. Exeter Guildhall will be turning red on the 4th of September to mark World Leukaemia Day and to raise awareness of leukaemia as part of the charity’s Spot Leukaemia campaign.
National blood cancer charity Leukaemia Care have organised the lighting of buildings across the UK to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of leukaemia, as part of their ‘Spot Leukaemia’ campaign. Twenty-eight buildings will be lighting up red to mark the twenty-eight people who are diagnosed with leukaemia in the UK every day.
Leukaemia is a form of blood cancer and has a significantly higher rate of emergency diagnosis (averaging at 42%) than the overall cancer average (21%). Emergency diagnosis is associated with a reduced prospect of survival and there are nearly 5000 deaths attributed to leukaemia every 2 years in the UK. The six most common symptoms of leukaemia are fatigue, feeling weak or breathless, fever, bruising or bleeding, repeated infections, and joint or bone bain.
World Leukaemia Day (WLD) takes place every September 4th and is a chance for patients, charities and healthcare professionals to raise awareness and share stories of their experience of blood cancer.
CEO for the charity, Zack Pemberton-Whiteley, said, “We’re delighted that Exeter Guildhall will lighting red on the 4th of September for World Leukaemia Day to help raise awareness. This is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that people can spot leukaemia. Leukaemia can be hard to spot because the signs and symptoms are common to other unrelated illnesses. Early diagnosis saves lives.”
