The Exeter Dental Centre is supporting this month’s Mouth Cancer Action Month, organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, by helping to raise awareness of mouth cancer in Exeter.

Running for the duration of November, Mouth Cancer Action Month features the tagline ‘If in doubt, get checked out’ and urges members of the public to visit their dentist for an oral screening.

Professional check-ups and regular self-examinations are the best route to early detection of mouth cancer. Early diagnosis saves lives, improving survival chances from just half of cases to more than 90 per cent.

Early warning signs include ulcers which do not heal within three weeks, red and white patches in the mouth and unusual changes in the mouth.

Mouth Cancer Action Month also aims to raise awareness of a disease which has remained under reported for too long. Prevention is the key, and lifestyle choices can help minimise risks.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of campaign organisers the British Dental Health Foundation, said: “We are delighted that that The Exeter Dental Centre has joined the many dental practices, schools, health professionals and community groups promoting Mouth Cancer Action Month.“

The Exeter Dental Centre, located in the city centre on Castle Street, is promoting the action month to its patients and is urging members of the public to book an appointment for a screening.

Principal dentist and centre owner Mr Micheal Hesketh said: “Early detection of mouth cancer is vital, and that is why it is so important that we, as dentists, play a role in helping patients seek treatment where needed. We hope that members of the public will take the opportunity to book their mouth cancer check.”

The Exeter Dental Centre, formerly the Castle Square Dental Practice, opened in July 2012. The centre now boasts four dentists, an implant expert and a specialist in periodontics.
