A service spokesman said: "We have been constantly busy throughout the night and into this morning with calls to weather-related incidents from across the service area.

"Occupants of several vehicles have been rescued by fire crews after becoming stuck in floodwater. The occupants were taken to safety and advised to contact their vehicle recovery service to recover their vehicles."

The spokesman urged drivers to heed the following advice with more rain forecast today:

Never drive through flood water, you will never know how deep it is.

If you are in an area liable to flooding, then it is a good idea to start making a personal flood plan which should include the following points:

• Know who to contact and how and keep a list with all your important contacts to hand

• Think about what you can move to a safe place before the waters arrive

• Check your insurance cover

• Know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies

• Prepare a flood kit of essential items including home insurance documents and keep it handy
