Mindful of the growing issue of e-waste, the team at Optix Solutions was delighted to find a new home for desktops that were no longer required.

As a busy digital business Optix is constantly investing in new tech - and so the company found itself with several redundant desktops gathering dust under desks in the office.

Managing Director, Rob Stevens explained: “Every business updates their desktops and laptops from time to time; outdated technology can be slower and have an impact on productivity which is not ideal, especially when your work is in the digital sector.

“The downside is that you then have old hardware taking up space, and sensitive data that you don’t want anyone else to access.”

In fact, businesses and individuals are sitting on thousands of pieces of tech from laptops and PCs to smartphones and tablets that they simply don’t want any more.

“Most people don’t really know what to do with them – tech isn’t something you throw in the bin or take to the tip. Often these items have personal data on them, and not everyone knows how to erase it to ensure security.

“The normal solution is to pay someone to dispose of the equipment in a secure way which often comes at a considerable cost to the business.”

Fortunately Optix Solutions’ new business partner Rebecca Riddler from Your Digital Future came across Gift Tech. Based in Exeter’s Southernhay, Gift Tech takes the kit and safely removes all personal data. The charity sorts through the donations and refurbishes any items that can continue to be used. Anything that is too far gone is recycled.

Rob added: “It’s the ideal solution – Gift Tech came to our offices and took the desktops away. We know that, once cleaned, stripped and refurbished, Optix’s old tech could make a real difference to those who would otherwise not be able to afford or have access to a PC.”

People can request devices by contacting Gift Tech online. Gift Tech also works with schools,  charities and other organisations that are in need of technology.
