CityVets today announced that it has achieved hospital status from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

With a member of staff on the premises 24 hours a day, this means that the CityVets veterinary team are always on hand and responsible for the care of animal patients.

The RCVS Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) is a voluntary initiative to accredit veterinary practices in the UK. Through setting standards and carrying out regular inspections, the Scheme aims to promote and maintain the highest standards of veterinary care.

By voluntarily agreeing to a regular and intensive examination and inspection of the practices, CityVets is checked for a whole range of issues relating to the care of its patients and their owners - for example the provision of detailed anaesthetic monitoring, extensively equipped laboratory, the provision and quality of a comprehensive range of diagnostic facilities including radiographic (X-ray), ultrasound and endoscopic facilities.

The quality of the case records, high standards of health and hygiene, staff training provision are also evaluated. It also covers the physical aspects of the buildings - for example isolation facilities to prevent the spread of disease from infectious patients, separation of cat and dog wards, recovery units, separate operating theatres for dental surgery, routine surgery and ultraclean for orthopaedics.

CityVets, which is a family owned practice and has four branches in Exeter, including Heavitree, Alphington, St Thomas, and Whipton has been at forefront of veterinary medicine and care since the Practice opened in 2007.  The state of the art Veterinary Hospital in Heavitree is equipped with the latest in technology and facilities, enabling the team to look after the most critically ill patients and provide them with the highest standard of care 24 hours a day.

Many of the Vet team have further qualifications, resulting in great expertise and interest in areas such as Orthopaedic and Soft Tissue surgery, Internal medicine, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Acupuncture, Exotics, Birds, Animal Behaviour and even a Physiotherapist and Rehabilitation expert.

Shaun Moore, Senior Partner, said: “We understand the importance of looking after our clients pets while they are away from home and this means having staff on the premises caring for them in a calm and comfortable environment, 24-hours a day, 365-days a year. We are pleased to be able to demonstrate to all our clients in Exeter that we have achieved the highest standard of veterinary practice available in the UK through an independent examination by our governing body.”

Margaret Cooksey Chairman of Exeter Cats Protection said: “The number of treatments involved with all the cats in our care has been absolutely staggering. In 2014 alone we saw 2,500 cats neutered with CityVets tackling over 20% of these cases.

"Over the years, CityVets have shown total dedication to both cat welfare and the charity and have always been willing to cope with last minute emergencies from delicate eye operations to neutering hundreds of feral cats brought in to the surgery in traps.

"Cats Protection wish CityVets great success with their new hospital status”.
