Communities across Devon can have their broken electrical items and gadgets fixed free of charge this summer at a series of community repair events held by Recycle Devon.

From Thursday 17 May to Friday 21 September. Recycle Devon will be visiting a number of Devon’s libraries to offer a free electrical repair service.

At these special REPAIR IT events, members of the public will be able to bring along any broken household electrical items, including computers, to be fixed by a team of expert menders at no cost.

The ‘REPAIR IT’ events are part of a countywide initiative to reduce waste, and the public are welcome to bring items ranging from toasters, kettles and hairdryers to games consoles, iPods and radios.

In previous events around 70 per cent of broken items bought to these events were fixed.

The events will run from 10am to 3pm and repairs will be carried out on a first come, first served basis, so please be prepared to wait.

Please note that they won’t be able to fix CRT TVs or monitors, electric blankets or microwaves, for safety reasons.

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Development and Waste said: “By reducing our dependency on throwing away and instead focusing on repairing and reusing items, we hope to inspire enthusiasm for a sustainable society.

“Research shows that more than 75% of the small electrical items that come into our recycling centres could be back up and running if they were repaired. You can read more here.

“These events are designed to help householders waste less and enable them to save money and resources by not having to replace something broken.”

Colin Bray, Service Development Manager for Libraries Unlimited, the charity responsible for running Devon’s libraries, said:

“We are really pleased that Recycle Devon are holding these free repair sessions in our libraries. As a charity we are fully committed to reducing waste, and we know our library users and local community members will value this service.”
