Budleigh Salterton's new £150k skate park to be officially opened

On 25 October 2019, from 12pm, East Devon District Council will be hosting the official opening of its new £150,000 concrete skate park in Lime Kiln car park in Budleigh Salterton.

The event will be managed by the council’s skate park designer and contractor, Maverick Industries Ltd. The council’s Chairman, Cllr Stuart Hughes, will open proceedings with a speech at 12pm followed by pro rider demonstrations from Rubicon Skateboards, Dominator Scooters and Scott Hamlin BMX.

There will be jam format competitions for scooter riders, followed by BMX riders and finally skaterboarders. The competitions are designed to give riders of all ages and skill levels the opportunity to participate. Pre-registration is not required so just turn up and enjoy the afternoon as it unfolds.

Much careful thought has been put into the skate park’s design and East Devon is grateful to the local user group for their excellent input. The council hopes that the park will offer something for everyone to enjoy - its features include a unique combined teardrop volcano, spine and a hipped flatbank, which caused much excitement among the user group.

A considerable amount of time has been spent ensuring that there is no requirement for handrails, which are expensive and cumbersome. This allows the park to have an open and free flowing feel.

The park is expected to attract wheeled sport enthusiasts of all abilities, both locally and from further afield.

Budleigh ward member Cllr Alan Dent said: “From a local viewpoint this is a much used facility and East Devon District Council along with some Section 106 money from recent developments were able to fund this wonderful upgrade. The skate park offers youngsters from our local community a brilliant outlet for their energy and helps to keep them fit and athletic. My thanks to all concerned for their vision, hard work and teamwork.”
