Author and activist to speak at Exeter Library on Ai and sexism

Laura Bates, the Sunday Times bestselling author and activist who founded the Everyday Sexism project, is coming to Exeter Library on 2nd July to do a talk on AI and how it is reshaping sexism.

The talk will focus on her latest book The New Age of Sexism: How the AI revolution is reinventing misogyny. She will discuss the seismic shift that AI is creating in our society, how it enables the spread of disinformation and what this means for women and marginalised groups.

The evening is part of a wider project from Libraries Unlimited. Commissioned by Ofcom and working in partnership with The Guardian Foundation, the charity has developed News Detective workshops for children, families and schools which are running in libraries across Devon and Torbay. These look to help people develop tools to spot misinformation and disinformation.

Other elements include collaborating with Exeter Science Centre to deliver a ‘Demystifying AI’ day and working with Running Dog Theatre to put on a show around fake news. Libraries Unlimited has also expanded its collection of books that build critical thinking in all ages, available both in the libraries and online via BorrowBox.

Laura Bates commented: "I'm thrilled to be speaking at Exeter Library and supporting this important project. With media literacy and public understanding often lagging behind the speed of AI development and the rapid spread of disinformation, it has never been more important to support individuals and communities to access technology in safe, ethical ways. Libraries are a crucial part of local infrastructure, providing a lifeline of information, learning, community and support to so many, so I couldn't be prouder to be working with Libraries Unlimited on this event!"

Alex Kittow, Chief Executive Officer, Libraries Unlimited added: “Libraries are trusted sources of information and we have a responsibility to maintain this, especially in the current landscape which is shifting daily and confusing for most of us. Learning how to spot misinformation and disinformation is crucial for our society. To have Laura Bates coming to discuss these ideas and their impact on our lives at Exeter Library is really important and we hope to have a full house for the event.”
