Local youth worker Derek George, a concierge officer at the Exeter Foyer in Commercial Road, has been shortlisted for a Foyer Legend Award at the prestigious national Foyer Federation Spark Awards which recognise the achievements and dedication of Foyer staff across the country.

Owned and operated by leading sheltered and supported housing provider Stonewater, Exeter Foyer houses local young people aged between 16 and 25 years who often arrive with very few personal possessions, many having run away from desperate and bleak situations. The Foyer team provides accommodation, training and support to these vulnerable young people with the aim of helping them to eventually live independently.

Derek has worked at the Foyer since it opened in 2001. He was nominated by his colleagues for the Foyer Legend Award, which recognises outstanding members of staff who have worked tirelessly for a decade or more in their Foyer.

The Foyer Federation creates programmes, campaigns and ideas for Foyers to implement, filling gaps in community services and inspiring policy and decision makers to make a more effective investment in young people. Organised by The Foyer Federation, The Spark Awards celebrate talent across the sector and this year will mark the Federation’s 26th anniversary.

“We are all really pleased that Derek has been shortlisted for this very special award,” says Guy Stenson, Stonewater’s Director of Housing Strategy & Transformation. “Derek’s been so committed to the Foyer, our residents and staff for over 17 years. He always goes the extra mile for people and works incredibly hard to provide an excellent service, supporting young people in their own communities. Derek is so deserving of this award and we’d love to see him win.”

Stonewater owns and operates four foyers, two women’s refuges and a wide range of other supported housing projects for adults and young people across the South of England.

The winner of the Foyer Legend Award will be announced at the Foyer Federation Spark Awards ceremony in Birmingham on 4 October 2018.
