Women's cycle speedway taster event

Exeter based GB star Charlie-Jane Herbert is keeping two hands firmly on her handlebars this weekend, as she lends a hand at a free Cycle speedway taster session. The youngster, who has represented Great Britain in Cycle speedway both in Australia and in the UK, is working hard to get more women involved in cycling, by teaming up with a selection of GB Cycle Speedway coaches, and other elite riders.

With Cycling on the increase this year and all the excitement of The Tour De France 2014 in Yorkshire, there really is no better time to take to two wheels. Sunday 1 June, will be the first free Cycle speedway taster event and will take place alongside a professional women’s league elite competition, plus individual racing for each level of ability.

Ian Brown, Sheffield Cycle Speedway Chairman and managing partner for Wosskow Brown Solicitors, based in Sheffield has let us in on all the details!

“The whole purpose of this competition is to develop women’s participation and provide a platform for women of all ages and ability to come and have a go. British Cycling currently run the Breeze campaign to get women to take up cycling and we hope to build upon that success and encourage more women into cycling.”

“Cycle speedway is a thrilling chase around the tracks, you can ride as individuals or as a team. Riders get hugely competitive and our league matches take place all over the country.”

“We will cater for every level, from the experienced road cyclist to the real novice rider. All ages can come along and try the sport and we encourage mums and daughters to take part together. Plus we will have plenty of goodies to give away to remember the day by.”

Running the free session will be a number of Great Britain coaches to provide free introductory tuition and there will also be several GB riders leading the session, including other GB Cycle Speedway stars, Lauren Hookway, Lucy Whitehead and Vicky Brown. The fantastic opportunity is being held to enthuse and excite youngster into cycling, not only as a sport, but also a lifestyle.
