Fifty years in business hailed as a ‘golden’ chance for opticians to give back to the community

A leading Exeter opticians is marking its 50th anniversary by throwing a special event for loyal customers that will see them able to bag a bargain pair of designer glasses.

Pullen & Symes Opticians has been an ever-present in Longbrook Street, Exeter for five decades and has forged a reputation as one of the south-west’s most recommended vision care practices.

It has opened a second branch in Ottery St Mary and has recently undertaken a period of sustained investment, bringing in the latest technology to ensure patients have access to the best possible eye care, as well as a wide choice of cutting-edge frames from designer brands in a newly renovated practice.

To celebrate 50 years of business, the team will hold an open event at the Exeter branch on Thursday, 20 November, complete with Prosecco, nibbles and a series of special offers. The practice will stay open late to coincide with the city’s late-night shopping promotion launching the Christmas period.

Owner Emma Hill said: “To still be in business after 50 years is not something to be sniffed at, particularly in the current retail environment. We wanted to do something special to celebrate with the people who matter to us the most, our long-standing patients.

“Their ongoing support has seen us not only survive, but thrive, and we look forward to raising a glass with them as we head into a bold new era, embracing the latest technology available to us to give them the very best eye care possible.”

The open event will see the practice team up with leading designer brand Lindberg, who will be bringing their full range along for viewing, with customers able to create their own fully bespoke designs.

Patients will be able to save 20 per cent on lenses when buying a Lindberg frame and will also be given a £50 voucher towards a future purchase.

Anyone buying Lindberg frames on the day will also be entered into a prize draw, with the lucky winner getting their new glasses completely free of charge.

Pullen & Symes is also a flagship practice for fellow Exeter optical company, Bird Eyewear, stocking the B Corp company’s full, award-winning range of sustainable premium eyewear.

The practice was originally formed by John Symes before Nicki and David Pullen came on board in 2003. With Emma now running both sites, the company is looking forward to seeing what the next 50 years can offer.

She said: “We’re in a very exciting time for optometry, with rapidly evolving technology meaning there are lots of changes happening very quickly.

“We’re committed to embracing these changes and making sure our patients are able to reap the benefits they bring, while staying true to our roots or promising exceptional customer service delivered by a warm, welcoming and friendly team.”
