Big Screen in the City returns

Princesshay, in partnership with Exeter Phoenix will host Big Screen in the City, an iconic outdoor cinema event for Exeter. Returning for its 22nd year, the five-day experience will take place in a new location on Princesshay Square.

Exeter Phoenix is known for delivering “One of the best outdoor cinemas” * and this year will be no exception with ten films from Exeter Phoenix’s Studio 74 including blockbuster hits, cult classics, family favourites and musical adventures.

Princesshay’s main square will be transformed to offer an immersive outdoor film experience for viewers to enjoy the magic of the movies on a huge LED screen, through a wireless headphone system supplied by Exeter-based Silent Social.

Al fresco film fans will be able to enjoy much-loved classics and new discoveries in this exciting film line-up with the illuminated Cathedral as a stunning backdrop. From the adventure story of Hook and the magic of The Wizard of Oz to the iconic romance of Pretty Woman and charm of Bridget Jones, these films promise to deliver some feel-good nostalgia. The modern adaptation Matilda the Musical will mesmerise with its extraordinary storytelling, while Flow offers a life-affirming journey.

The five-day movie marathon will begin with a magical feel-good Wicked sing-along and end with the iconic blockbuster hit Top Gun – the perfect opportunity to bring out those aviators.

Claire Horrocks, Exeter Phoenix Film Programmer said “Whether it's with friends, family or even strangers, cinema is best when experienced together. The opportunity to see this fantastic collection of films will be made even better by watching them outdoors. Exeter Phoenix love working with Princesshay and we can’t wait to share this event with the city.”

The pop-up cinema will offer a variety of seating options on a first-come, first-served basis, including bean bags, with deckchairs available to book for evening and Bank Holiday screenings. The site will have fully accessible facilities with a dedicated area for wheelchair users, as well as access to Princesshay toilets.

Refreshments will be available at a pop-up bar with a selection of street food vendors nearby, together with take-out favourites from Princesshay’s restaurants including POP Kitchen, Wagamama, Hanlee’s and YO!Sushi.

Hannah Overton, Princesshay Marketing and Commercialisation Manager said “We are delighted to team up with Exeter Phoenix to host the Big Screen in the City. Having previously supported the event we know how popular it is with Exeter residents, visitors and tourists so we’re glad to play our part in bringing it back for 2025.”

Big Screen in the City is sponsored by Korev Lager and Coastal Recycling.

Nicole Bates, Marketing Manager at Coastal Recycling said: “When we heard the Exeter Pheonix were looking for funding support for Big Screen in the City, we knew we wanted to be involved once again. Supporting organisations and projects in the communities we work in is important to us, and especially those that align with our sustainable ethos and community spirit. This is hands down the best line-up of films we’ve seen at a Big Screen event and attendees will be guaranteed great entertainment under the stars.”
