Take part in a fun run with a difference to support the work of Exeter Dementia Action Alliance
Muddifords Court is supporting the Exeter Dementia Action Alliance (EDAA) by staging a ‘fun run’ with a difference.
And there is no excuse not to take part, as participants can also jog or walk!
The 5-mile Muddifords Cheese Fun Run is open to all and takes place on Sunday 8th October from 10am.
All of the proceeds will support core funds for the invaluable community work of EDAA which was formed by Gina Awad in January 2015.
Nicky Baker who owns Muddifords Court, a Devon coutry house in Willand, Cullompton, said: “My association with Gina Awad and the Exeter Dementia Action Alliance has been my own little piece of serendipity.
“I worked with Gina over 20 years ago but had lost contact with her until our paths crossed at the opening of the spectacular residential home in Pinhoe, Green Tree Court, almost three years ago.
“The purpose of my visit was necessitated by the need to place both of my parents in a home together since my mother's Alzheimer's condition meant that we were no longer able to care for her at home, and my continued dissatisfaction with my father's care at another local care home – he too was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2005.
“Gina was there in her capacity as a Dementia Friends Champion with a vision to work towards a Dementia Friendly Exeter.”
Gina's dedication and gritty determination in raising awareness of dementia in Exeter is not borne out of personal experience but due to an overwhelming passion to make both those caring for and those living with dementia better understood within the local community.
Nicky added: “I could obviously relate to this and had found our family's per-sonal journey and experience of this insidious disease extremely difficult and misunderstood. Not even the medical profession seemed able to assist and indeed in my mother's case informed me that I was over reacting when I insisted that my mother was displaying the traits I had recognised in my father, putting her symptoms down to 'depression'.
“It is apparent that as individuals we are frightened by the unknown and there continues to be enormous stigma attached to dementia. The EDAA are therefore pivotal in campaigning to remove this fear, replacing it with knowledge, understanding and above all humility.
"Dementia has no regard for age, social demographic or even physical. However, the reality does not have to be total doom and gloom and there can be many rays of sunshine enjoyed when the mind clouds clear and glimpses of the loved one return once more.”
Gina Awad said, "We are so very grateful for Nicky's support but would like to acknowledge whilst this gives the alliance another opportunity to raise awareness, we certainly do not wish to deter that this will bring Nicky and her family’s situation right to the forefront having been deeply emotive over a number of years. As an alliance we thank Nicky very much for her ongoing support and partnership.”
On Sunday 8th October from 10am the Fun Run will begin .. as in the spirit of fun there is no competition here but an inclusive family event that will end at Muddifords Court seeing live music plus BBQ from Scoffs Catering, Wyke Cheese - Tom’s Toasties, bouncy castle and face painting. Plus all participants will receive a goody bag from Ashfords Solicitors.
