Local homebuilder Barratt David Wilson Homes Exeter has recently donated £1,500 to Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), the leading provider of screening and cardiac testing for young people aged 14-35. The donation is part of the developers community fund initiative.

The Barratt Developments community fund initiative looks to support those causes which have a positive impact within their local communities. CRY has been providing specialist cardiac screening to young people and athletes since 1995. CRY has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death and supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to affected families. Alongside its pioneering screening programme, CRY also funds a specialist referral and family assessment service as well as an internationally acclaimed pathology unit.

Dr Steven Cox, Chief Executive of the charity, commented; “On behalf of all of us at CRY, I’d like to say a huge “thank you” to Barratt David Wilson Homes, Exeter for nominating CRY as a worthy recipient of this generous donation.

“Every week, 12 apparently fit and healthy young people in the UK die suddenly from a previously undiagnosed heart condition. In 80% of these cases, there will have been no signs or symptoms of a heart defect until it is too late, which is why CRY believes screening is so vitally important. Currently, we’re testing around 25,000 young people each year via our nationwide screening programme and thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts of families, communities and businesses, we’re able to offer this at no cost to the individual when they sign up.

“We also know that research saves lives too, so it’s vital that we can maintain our internationally acclaimed research programme and continue training a new generation of cardiologists who specialise in detecting and treating the condition that can cause a sudden cardiac arrest in a young person.

“Fundraising and corporate donations also mean we can support families affected by young sudden cardiac death through our specialist bereavement support network.

“So, thank you again for thinking of CRY. We really do appreciate it.”

Nicki Reid, sales director for Barratt David Wilson Homes Exeter, said: “Community is at the heart of our developments and we are proud to be supporting CRY, a charity that provides life changing support and screening, saving the lives of many young people across the region. We are warmed that this donation is going towards such a valuable and necessary cause, supporting and sustaining the charities incredible research, screening and support services.”
