No homeowner wants to look like a copycat. It’s for this reason why you must avoid following interior design trends or attempting to replicate your loved ones’ homes.

To impress every single visitor that you welcome inside your home, you must aim to put a distinctive stamp on your property. If you are unsure how to turn your house into a stunning home, read the below guide to creating a unique interior design.

Add Intrigue into a Room

Create intrigue by incorporating objects that will instantly grab a visitor’s eye. For example, hang oversized artwork onto one wall within a room or incorporate an antique mirror glass style into your furniture or kitchen splash-backs. You also could play with scale; for instance, add a large lamp onto a small table.

Develop a Mood

One reason why your interior design ideas might be falling flat could be your inability to create a mood. Before you start buying paint, wallpaper, furniture, and accessories, you must think carefully about the style you want to achieve and the mood you want to create inside your home.

For example, if you want to feel relaxed as soon as you step inside your living room, you should:

  • Decorate a room in a relaxing colour scheme (think blue or green)
  • Add cosy, fluffy rugs
  • Incorporate luxurious textiles
  • Add scented candles or a diffuser

Stick to the Rule of Three

There is nothing wrong with showcasing your hobbies or passions across rooms within the home. However, to avoid a cluttered appearance, you should stick to the rule of three. For example, you should incorporate three eclectic objects into your interior, but ensure you stick to hues that complement your colour scheme and the room’s style. If possible, aim to place three items together that vary from light to dark tones.

Create Friction with Texture

Inject some friction into your décor by incorporating a diverse mix of textures, which can make your home appear layered. If every surface is the same, it could lead to your interior appearing both one-dimensional and dull. For example, don’t add velvet decorative accessories onto a velvet sofa. Instead, add a leather cushion or a cotton throw blanket.

Repeat Shapes Across Your Home

To develop a harmonious space that will make your guests’ jaws drop, you shouldn’t be afraid to repeat shapes across the home. For example, complement a round coffee table with a round mirror and a round vase.

Perfect Your Floor Plan

Many people often give their colour scheme, furniture, and accessories a great deal of thought, but fail to provide their floor plan with the same attention.

If, however, you want a room to appear bright, spacious, and airy, you must leave plenty of space between your furniture. It can create a more attractive interior style and will provide more freedom for you and your guests to move. For instance, you should aim to leave approximately 45cm of space between your sofa, coffee tables, and chairs.
