Over-55s have the chance to move into a state-of-the-art Exeter later living community, Millbrook Village – without being tied into home ownership. Inspired Villages has made properties at its Millbrook development available to renters, as well as homeowners, to provide  a helping hand in the wake of the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

By renting, rather than committing to buying a home, over-55s in the city can better manage their future outgoings. The rental option at Millbrook is offered with a service charge, including all utility and energy costs, so residents know exactly how much they need to pay – giving them much-needed stability at a time of economic upheaval.

The news means more over 55s have the chance to ‘right size’ by moving out of their present home, which may be too big for their needs, and into one of Millbrook’s spacious and modern apartments. Renting also offers them the flexibility to move in and out easily – ideal for anyone who is undecided about where they want to spend their retirement.

At Millbrook, over-55s can enjoy a happier, healthier and more independent later life thanks to facilities including a swimming pool and gym and the many social events that take place at the friendly community. In fact, being fit and healthy in retirement is more important now than ever before, especially because people most at risk from Covid-19 include those who are aged 70 or over and people who are obese.*

For David Phillips, aged 87, renting a two-bedroom apartment at Millbrook has given him the chance to experience life at the retirement community without committing to home ownership. He says: “Renting has offered me the opportunity to spend some time assessing if this will be suitable for me without a long-term commitment.”

As well as the pool and gym, Millbrook’s other facilities include a cinema, library and games room, and it was the lure of an active lifestyle that was among the main reasons behind David’s move. He says: “I enjoy playing bridge, indoor bowls and skittles, as well as using the gym and pool, and there’s a good community spirit and friendliness, which I particularly like about the village.”

During the coronavirus lockdown, the village team at Millbrook did all they could to ensure residents didn’t feel isolated, as David explains: “They’ve done marvels at keeping things going, particularly regarding the food, with the setting up of the lunch service and village shop. The development of activities through Zoom has also been fantastic and I’ve enjoyed choir and Pilates sessions.”

David’s daughter, Carolyn, was also a big factor in his decision to move to Millbrook. She says: “The facilities to keep Dad fit and active are perfect and he is able to join in with as much or as little as he needs. The sense of community is lovely. Also, I’m now not worried about the future for him. Renting has given him the freedom to do as he wants.”

James Cobb, Director of Inspired Villages, says: “We are all about providing great options for residents to suit their individual needs. For some people, rental means they can unlock their housing wealth, so they can live an active and sociable later life with full financial security. Others may never have been on the housing ladder but still want to access the lifestyle that our villages offer, and some see this as a great opportunity to make sure the village is the right place for them.

“We want more people to embrace the lifestyle that is on offer at Millbrook, with all of its health and wellbeing benefits. Providing flexible rental options is a great way to allow people to enjoy the best years of their life.”
