Over the past month Exeter and the Heart of Devon Hotels & Restaurants Association have been asking locals and holiday makers alike to choose what they like to do best in the county. With options that included be adventurous and try kite surfing in Exmouth, take a brisk walk on Dartmoor and explore Kent’s Cavern, England’s oldest caves, there was definitely something for everyone.

The winning activity was awarded to The Red Coat Tours and Exeter Cathedral. The tours are situated in Exeter and involve a walk around the historic sites of the city including one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture, Exeter Cathedral.

Dave Adcock, spokesperson for the Red Coat Tours said: “Exeter’s Red Coat Guides are thrilled to be voted the ‘favourite thing to do in Devon'. This year we are celebrating our 25th anniversary, the guides are proud of their role as ambassadors of the city, and enjoy exploring Exeter’s rich heritage with their visitors. They are a dedicated group of people and are on duty 363 days of the year come rain or shine.”

Not only did those entering get to take part in voting for Devon’s favourite activity, but they also got the chance to win a weekend break at the stunning Mill End Hotel, situated on the outskirts of Chagford.

Mike Coombes, managing director at the Mill End Hotel, commented:  “Many of our guests staying with us on Dartmoor take a day-trip to Exeter during their stay. A Red Coat Tour is a great way to experience the heritage and sights of Exeter, thanks to the guides’ fantastic knowledge of the city and its history.”

The Red Coat Tours run throughout the year and these free guided, walking tours are the ideal way to explore Exeter. There are many different tours on offer, including Murder and Mayhem where visitors can find out all there is to know about the riots, murders, burnings, and hangings that went on in the city. Less gruesome are the elegant Exeter tours, which include hearing about famous royal visits to the city and who lived in the stunning Georgian houses in Southernhay.
