While the travel season is often confined to the six or seven weeks of school summer holidays for the average family, holidays are there to be enjoyed all year round. Whether you’re beating the cold of the English winter by travelling to warmer climes or taking advantage of reduced prices by travelling in the off-season, there is much reward to be had for enjoying a getaway at a time of your choosing.

There are also many rewards in taking your family on an adventure. Most family holidays involve coastal resorts in the Balearic or Mediterranean – but there is a whole world of culture and beauty to explore. Here we’re focusing on Brazil, the South American country brimming with experiences. But is it safe for a family holiday, and how would you plan one?

About Brazil

Brazil is a stunning country, and one of the largest in the world; it is over three million square miles in size and makes up a large majority of the South American continent. Brazil is officially a ‘federative republic’, comprising 26 states as well as a central federal district.

Across those 27 distinct zones lie a smorgasbord of attractions, from areas of utterly outstanding beauty to sites of historical interest and more besides. Thrumming urban centres, beautiful landscapes and fabulous shores together make planning a trip to Brazil a very difficult thing indeed. Where should you begin, and how should you choose between attractions and locations?

Potential Issues

While figuring out the specifics of your perfect Latin-American holiday activities seems the biggest of pre-trip undertakings, it is also important to recognise the various issues and even risks associated with travel to a new country – particularly when it comes to Brazil.

Firstly, Brazil holidays are naturally a more expensive endeavour than trips to popular seaside resorts. As such, your trip will need a little more planning when it comes to funding. There is always the option to take out a loan for your trip, which can enable you to offset costs and ensure the best accommodation in the more expensive urban areas.

There are also certain geographical areas that are no-go for families, and others that may not add the best experience to your holiday. Crime, particularly robberies, is prevalent in some of Brazilian cities. But the dangerous cities are well-known and well-publicised, making it easy to plan your trip around avoiding certain areas.

Planning a Family-Friendly Trip

With the above taken into consideration, planning your dream family trip to Brazil should be a cinch. Firstly, do you intend to travel across Brazil or are you hoping for a one-destination stay? For the former, you should plan a tentative route if only to work out your transport options for arrival and departure.

For the latter, numerous areas hold enough for a month of holidaying, let alone the week or fortnight for which you’ll be visiting. Sao Paolo is an expansive city with oodles to explore, from urban green spaces to vibrant centres. Rio de Janeiro is the carnival city, a coastal delight and home to the edifying Christ the Redeemer. Crucially, both areas are chock-full of family-friendly activities.
