The summer is finally here and it’s time to get back out into the world and make the most of the glorious sunshine. Make the most of the fresh air this year and visit one of Exeter’s many campsites, all perfect for motorhomes. Travelling with a motorhome is one of the most cost-effective holidays because you simply load up your van, find your spot, and your home is already set up; no need to faff around with a tent.

You may think that getting a motorhome is an unnecessary expense, but it’s a long-term investment that opens up a lot of doors. For example, if you’ve got a family and usually pay for expensive hotels and travel, you don’t need to worry about that because you’ve sorted out your accommodation and travel in one fell swoop. Further, there’s no need to fear arriving at a filthy room with remnants of the last occupants plaguing the bathroom.

How Much Would it Cost?

The average cost of a motorhome in the UK is £47,000 - £80,000 - with savings to be made if you opt for a used model. Now, this may seem like a lot of money to invest. However, when you consider that the motorhome will last you around 10-30 years depending on how well-maintained it is, you’re looking at a solid investment. There are other costs to consider, like motorhome insurance that should cost you around £400 a year (which still isn’t that bad). You can get a comparative quote for your motorhome insurance from Quotezone. Whilst you’re at it, you may as well see if you’re on the best rates for your energy and broadband bills - finding cheaper options from Quotezone means more money for your motorhome.

Now you know that buying a campervan is a feasible option, let’s take a look at some of Exeter’s hot spots.

Haldon Forrest Holiday Park

This 3,500-acre woodland is located just 15 minutes away from Exeter and offers fun for all of the family. There are exhilarating mountain bike trails, quaint walks, and exciting orienteering courses to keep you busy. You can also find one of the Go Ape high ropes centres if you want to try your hand at something more highbrow. The actual campsite is located about a mile from Haldon Park and will cost around £28 to pitch up your motorhome for the night. The site itself has a shop, a modern toilet and shower block, a playground, and picturesque ponds.

Hill Pond Caravan and Camping Park

This rural site is situated in East Devon, about a 5-minute drive from Crealy Adventure Park. You will find fun for everyone there, with rollercoasters, wild animals, and enough adventure to fill your boots. When the excitement gets too much, you can take a short 20 minutes to drive over to Exmouth beach. If that isn’t enough for you, you can head over to Exeter and explore the gothic cathedral and its underground tunnels. A night at this site will set you back anywhere from £16 per night for 2 adults.

Holmans Wood Holiday Park

This award-winning holiday park set within 12-acres of hills and hedgerows, on the outskirts of Exeter and Newton Abbot with bus links just outside. A night here will only set you back a minimum of £20 a night for 2 adults. Included with your stay is access to a range of facilities at Finlake Resort. There is ample woodland to explore, and the coastal towns of Dawlish, Teignmouth, and the English Riviera are located just a few miles away.

Castle Brake Holiday Park

This lush family-run park is located within Woodbury Common and is just a short drive from Exeter. The facilities here are spotless, with the toilet and shower block having a lavish heated floor. There is a delicious bar and restaurant on-site that cooks up a range of tasty meals using local fresh ingredients. Nearby there are plenty of things to do, with the Jurassic Coast just a short drive away. To stay here you will only have to spend around £22 for one night.

Sunnyhaye Fruit Farm

Slightly more pricey, at £30 per night, this semi-wild site is set on an eco fruit farm and spans 62 acres. The site is located a 25-minute drive from Exeter and is on the doorstep of Woodbury common, which is perfect for nature walks and birdwatching. With a stay here you will find several activities including canoeing, golf, mountain biking, and fishing.

Exeter is home to many treasures and makes the perfect base for a getaway in the motorhome. If you were on the fence about investing in a motorhome before you started reading, hopefully now you feel closer to taking the dive and being able to drive your home up and down the country.
