In this article I would like to discuss some points to consider for females when training with weights / resistance. Some issues like ‘bulking up’, ‘getting manly’, ‘injuries’, ‘excess protein’ are all topics of interest and concern. I will try to tackle a few of these issues and more here...

Bulking up / hypertrophy: It is unlikely that a hormonally normal female will add a lot of bulky muscle with weight training. The normal physiological change is to add some density and strength but normally not bulky muscle, depending on the training method. It is difficult enough for males to...

Scientists may have taken the first steps in finding a treatment for conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. A study published in the journal Science Transitional Medicine claimed that researchers had managed to halt brain cell death in mice. Although potentially decades from a human application the study indicates that medicine which halts brain cell death is in the realms of possibility. The scientists induced a neurodegenerative condition in the mice using abnormal prion proteins which produces an approximation of human neurodegenerative disorders.

Continuity of care could cut delays in cancer diagnosis

Continuity of care so that all patients see the same GP with whom they build up a relationship over time could help reduce delays in the diagnosis of cancer in primary care. In an essay published by the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, a team of primary care experts write that this, together with longer consultations and better distribution of information to GPs about referral pathways or new services could have a wide reaching impact on the early diagnosis of cancer and survival. Yet, write the authors, recent changes in the structure of the NHS and the continuing pressure on...

Hip-hop event in Exeter to help remove the stigma surrounding mental health issues

Hip-hop culture is being used as a vehicle for raising awareness about mental health at an event on Thursday 17 October, 7.30pm at Mama Stone’s in Exeter.

Although the lyrics of hip hop music are often associated with swearing, rapping about money and the exploitation of women, there are also rappers whose unfiltered narration goes beyond this by describing the harsh realities of their world and the coping mechanisms employed by some young people. The music can be rich with references, for example, to addiction, psychosis, bipolar disorder and the effects of urbanicity, poor...

In the study, 74 people with Type 1 Diabetes were tested to see how much natural insulin they produced and if they were functioning in response to meals 73% of the sample was found to still have active insulin-making cells in tests at the Exeter Clinical Research Facility. It was previously thought that all these cells were destroyed by the immune system within a few years of having the disease. Alex Nesbitt, 56, one of the volunteers in the study was diagnosed with...
