Halloween is almost upon us, with it comes scary movies, ghost walks, silly costumes and, typically for children, filling buckets with chocolate, sweets and snacks.

But while the night may be fun and enjoyable for all, it could turn out to be a particularly ghastly for our teeth, says Mike Hesekth of The Exeter Dental Centre.

He said: "Letting children enjoy themselves but finding a compromise could help your child's oral health in the short and long term. And remember, it's not just children this applies too. After all, how many parents out there are dipping...

Around 30,000 women die from a stroke every year(ii). The condition is the third leading cause of death in women in the UK), and the second biggest killer worldwide(iii). The findings, based on the responses of 170 people in the South West who took part in...

Divorce preferred to dentist visit!

The state of the nation’s teeth has been a running joke for decades, but it seems we’re no closer to the perfect smile as data released today by Toothpick, the UK’s leading dental bookings platform, reveals that one in seven of us would rather endure a divorce, move house or attend a job interview than endure half an hour in the dentist’s chair.

With one third of Brits admitting to not having visited the dentist in more than two years it is inevitable that the state of the nation’s teeth is suffering. This combined with, in some cases, the need for extensive treatment when we do...

Surgery warning to smokers and obese

Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (NEW Devon CCG) is set to announce a series of 'urgent and necessary' measures to address a worsening of its financial situation. Last year the CCG returned a £14.5 million deficit (known as a control total) and this year it had been predicting the same. But its confidence in meeting this at the end of the current financial year has gradually declined as the situation has become clearer; in short, demand for services is outstripping what it can afford. Whatever the actual cause of the increase in demand, it is having a...

Lung cancer patients in the South West missing out on surgery every year

Around 120 (119.8)* lung cancer patients in the South West may be missing out on life-saving surgery each year, according to figures released by Cancer Research UK today (Friday).

With the countdown to the General Election underway, the news comes as the charity launches a new campaign - ‘Cross Cancer Out’.

Playing on the idea of a ballot paper, it asks election candidates to back a raft of vital measures aimed at ensuring all cancer patients are diagnosed much earlier and have greater access to the best possible treatments.

Worryingly, figures for lung cancer in...

University of Exeter researchers are looking for fathers, or men trying to conceive a baby, to spare a few minutes to fill in an online survey to help find out why increasing numbers of couples are suffering from fertility problems.

The study will investigate the effect that stress, smoking, alcohol and occupation may have on male fertility.

The causes of fertility problems in men are largely unknown as most research focuses exclusively on mothers. This study addresses the problem by asking questions about the environmental factors that are encountered by men in everyday...

Most people risking skin damage

Members of the public in Exeter are still not wearing SPF on a daily basis, despite potential health risks, a recent survey reveals*.
