Lush makes it easy for vegetarians to stick to their ethics and stay beautiful

It’s National Vegetarian Week this week and there really is no better time to watch what you put on your skin. Lush’s fresh handmade cosmetics are full of fresh fruit and vegetables and made with the finest natural ingredients (organic where possible) and essential oils, are not tested on animals and look good enough to eat. They are 100% suitable for vegetarians, as accredited by The Vegetarian Society, and 80% are also approved by the Vegan Society - not just for this week, but all year round.

Choose from the delicious products below to create your own veggie recipe for beautiful skin this spring …

Cleanse …

Regular exfoliation is the most important step in a beauty routine to keep skin stimulated and working at its peak.  Choose from a selection of Lush’s exfoliating fresh vegetarian cleansers (all £6.25 for 100g) that contain both gentle exfoliating ingredients, along with softening clays. For normal skin there’s our international best-seller Angels on Bare Skin; for oilier skin types, Dark Angels which uses charcoal and black sugar to scrub and deeply cleanse the face; Herbalism for blemish prone skin; and for more sensitive skins choose something like Aqua Marina with soothing calamine to reduce redness and inflammation.

Steam …

Once you’ve thoroughly cleansed your skin, treat it to a steam with our Steamer Tabs (£2.50 each) ... These solid tablets are designed to be equally as beneficial to the skin as they are to the mind and contain a blend of oils such as neroli and lavender or tea tree and rose absolute to clean your face whilst you inhale the mood adjusting essential oils.  When the water has cooled, you can use cotton wool or a flannel in the water to wash away any traces of cleanser or dirt from your face, neck and chest.

There’s no packaging and no preservatives, so these are a win for you and a win for the environment.

Facemask …

After steaming your face, your pores will be left open and ready to accept all the benefits and vitamins of a facemask. Use once a week as the perfect way to get lots of lovely, fresh ingredients onto your skin and leave them there for a while to work their magic. Lush’s range of facemasks are so fresh they have a shelf life of only 3 weeks and need to kept refridgerated. Catastrophe Cosmetic (£5.95 for 75g) is full of vitamin and mineral rich fresh blueberries. Rose absolute and chamomile essential oil will reduce redness and irritation, while calamine and talc deep clean and soothe the skin at the same time. Combined together they provide your skin with a good deep cleanse without causing puffiness – leaving the face cool, clear and calm.

Moisturise …

Use some of the left over Steamer Tab water to wash away the facemask and finish off with a nourishing moisturiser.  As we come into summer, using an SPF is essential. Lush’s British Nanny (£25.95 for 45g) contains SPF30 to help protect skin from the sun. It’s a tightening and nourishing cream, packed full of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant to help mop up damaging free radicals. Almond and hisbiscus oils give vitamins C and E and an array of lovely vegetarian ingredients are also included to moisturise and hydrate; Shea Butter, Almond Oil, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Starflower Oil, Hibiscus Seed Oil and Candelilla Wax.

Colour…

To complement your vegetarian skincare regime, add some animal-friendly colour with Lush’s vegan Emotional Brilliance range of 30 liquid lips, cream eyeshadows and liquid eyeliners.

The Eyes Right mascara (£12.00) contains lots of nutritious wheatgrass which is packed full of vitamins and minerals to really condition and nourish the lashes. With only one preservative (while most mascara on the market contains between 4-6) it is ideal for those with sensitive eyes who are looking for a kind, natural look – although it can be reapplied to give a more dramatic, emphasised effect.
