Exeter dental clinic offers free mouth cancer checks to the public on Mouth Cancer Awareness Day
A private dental practice, located in the heart of Exeter, is offering members of the public a free mouth cancer check as part of the Mouth Cancer Foundation’s Awareness Day on Wednesday 18 September.
The Exeter Dental Centre is the only practice in Exeter to sign up to the free checks on the inaugural Mouth Cancer Awareness Day, and on Wednesday (September 18th) members of the public will be able to undergo free screenings with dentist Mr Ruairi Cunnane.
Mouth cancer can be deadly and early detection is essential. In the UK, nearly 8,000 people are diagnosed with mouth cancer every year. Cancers can occur in any part of the mouth, tongue, lips, and adjacent areas like the throat, salivary glands, pharynx, larynx, sinus, and other sites in the head and neck area. In its very early stages, these mouth cancers can be easy to ignore.
Principal dentist and centre owner Mr Micheal Hesketh said: “We’re pleased to be able to offer members of the public free mouth cancer checks at The Exeter Dental Centre on Wednesday, 18 September, with Ruairi Cunnane, our associate dentist, who has been working as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation trust.
“Early detection of mouth cancer is vital, and that is why it is so important that we, as dentists, play a role in helping patients seek treatment where needed. As the only dental practice in the city offering these free screenings, we hope that members of the public will take the opportunity to book their mouth cancer check.”
The Exeter Dental Centre, formerly the Castle Square Dental Practice, opened in July 2012. The centre now boasts four dentists, an implant expert and a specialist in periodontics.
