Devon’s finest honoured at prestigious Food Drink Devon Awards

Devon’s talented food and drink scene was alive at Monday night’s vibrant annual Food Drink Devon Awards.  The county’s finest food and drink producers, hospitality and catering businesses and speciality retailers celebrated in style at the esteemed Awards’ ceremony, held at the magnificent 19th century Victorian hotel, The Imperial in Torquay.  The ceremony was hosted, for the first time, by Devon food and drink champion BBC Radio Devon’s, Kerry White.

The semi-finalists and finalists for the prestigious South West Chef of the Year competition have been announced.   Judged by a panel of some of the South West’s finest chefs and led by Michael Caines MBE, the finalists have been selected across five categories: Professional, Young Professional, Home Cook, Junior Chef and Student.

With just over a month until the prestigious Food Drink Devon Awards’, the finalists, which include many of the county’s most respected and influential artisan food and drink producers, have been revealed. 

Since entries closed in April, the esteemed panel of judges and industry experts have tasted and scored over 250 products from a staggering 67 producers, visited 70 hospitality establishments and 25 retail outlets across Devon to select the finest.

Indie restaurant Rusty Pig has been awarded gold in the latest round of the Taste of the West Awards.

The popular eaterie in Yonder Street received the accolade in the Restaurant category of the awards.

Rusty Pig founder, chef Robin Rea said: “We were quite a late entry into this year’s awards schedule, and the whole team is thrilled that we have been judged worthy of a gold.

Due to the adverse weather conditions that are forecast over the next few days, in the interests of health and safety, East Devon District Council has reluctantly taken the decision to postpone Honiton Gate to Plate 

After taking advice from the Met Office and the emergency services, we have decided, with heavy hearts, to postpone the Honiton Gate to Plate event this coming Saturday 10 August.

Honiton’s High Street will be buzzing on Saturday (10 August) as around 50 fine food, drink and craft producers will be joined by top chefs, food experts and talented entertainers for this year’s Gate to Plate.

A great programme of events are lined up throughout the day with live music on the entertainment stage and a cooking stage featuring chefs and food experts giving live demonstrations.

Honiton’s Gate to Plate event is making a welcome return to the town on Saturday 10 August.

Featuring around 50 fine food, drink and craft producers, there will also be cookery demonstrations by some of the area's top chefs and food experts who will be presenting their work in an on-street show kitchen.

The free event will continue the town’s wonderful and long established market tradition, which dates back to the 13th Century when Honiton was granted a Royal Charter to hold a market.
