Ottery’s Rusty Pig goes gold

Indie restaurant Rusty Pig has been awarded gold in the latest round of the Taste of the West Awards.

The popular eaterie in Yonder Street received the accolade in the Restaurant category of the awards.

Rusty Pig founder, chef Robin Rea said: “We were quite a late entry into this year’s awards schedule, and the whole team is thrilled that we have been judged worthy of a gold.

Sourdough pizza pioneers, Franco Manca has announced the launch of their very first Exeter pizzeria. Bringing Neapolitan pizza to the city of Exeter, the much-loved pizzeria has also pledged to help local communities by donating to local homeless shelters and food banks, one pizza for every pizza enjoyed by our customers at our newly opened Exeter home.

Toby Carvery is showing its support for the armed forces by inviting military personnel across Exeter to join them for a free breakfast or carvery meal on Armed Forces Day, which this year falls on Saturday 29th June.

The special Armed Forces Day offer is available to serving troops, veterans and reserves across the whole of the British armed forces, as a way of saying thank you for all of their hard work.

Local chefs and hospitality professionals will come together with catering students from South Devon College and City College Plymouth on June 24th at Kitley House Hotel and Restaurant, near Yealmpton.

The special event, organised by The Chefs’ Forum, will see chefs and front-of-house staff from across the county rub shoulders with catering suppliers and aspiring college students. Billed as ‘A Chefs’ Summer BBQ’, the day will offer inspiring butchery demonstrations and a great networking opportunity for hospitality professionals from Devon and neighbouring counties.

We are a friendly, social group who raise money to support the Hospice services that are provided in Crediton and the surrounding communities.

We enjoy organising fun, local events in the town and are proud to say we raise thousands of pounds each year to help support the local nurses who care for people in our community in their homes when they have been given a terminal diagnosis and need expert end of life care.

Food Drink Devon has announced it will be hosting its first food and drink industry summer party on Monday 17th June at Dartington Hall (6.30pm – 9.30pm).  With fabulous local food, drink, entertainment, demonstrations and the chance to network and socialise with like-minded colleagues, tickets are already selling fast amongst members and non-members.

Tickets cost £20 per person for members and £30 per person for non-members and can be purchased from Eventbrite by following this link.

Fans of flavour submitted dozens of entries to this year’s sausage recipe competition run by The Butchers at Dart’s Farm, with the winning entrant of three shortlisted recipes announced at this year’s Exeter Food Festival earlier in May. 

There was an air ambulance related winner this year, with Stuart Elms, Clinical Director at Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, taking the top spot.

No fish please, we're millennials!

Recent research from the national body, Seafish, has uncovered that millennials eat 50% less fish than their grandparent’s generation. Are we surprised at this? The British tend to eat most of their fish fried, unlike their continental European neighbours who eat more grilled or simply cooked seafood. Restaurant owner and seafood chef Mitch Tonks has seen this himself and puts it partly down to there being very little for customers between fine dining seafood and traditional chippies and an increasing awareness but lack of information regarding sustainability.
