Drinkers in Devon are being encouraged to make a pledge to give up alcohol for a month in January, as part of the national Alcohol Awareness week (19th-25th November).

Devon County Council and NHS Devon have given their support to the campaign, being run by Alcohol Concern, which this year focuses on the theme: "it’s time to talk about drinking". As part of its campaign, Alcohol Concern is challenging people to have all kinds of conversations about the health risks, social problems, stigmas and taboos associated with talking about the dangers of alcohol.

Christmas is coming, and so are all the relatives and friends. Devon residents might be delighted to see their guests, but may be fretting that they just can’t cope with all the cooking this will mean. Our local Devon Chef, Tim Harris, may be able to help.

Tim says "I know what it's like when you want to relax and spend time with friends or the family, but you're also worrying about what to feed them".

Tim is generally known for running the successful cookery classes and demonstrating cooking at local events – Quickes’ Devon Apple Day and the community...

Here's a 'meaty' vegetable dish to tempt you

Try out this tasty recipe for Stir-Fried Bok Choy with Ginger and Garlic...

This Chinese influenced dish is inspired by Fuchsia Dunlop's new book Every Grain of Rice which I reviewed recently in The Exeter Daily. She cooks a version with mushrooms which is also great. Even without the mushrooms this has a lovely meaty flavour and is a great accompaniment to other Chinese meat dishes or even as a main course in its own right with some fried rice or noodles. I will be showing how easy it is to cook when I do the cookery demonstrations at Ashgrove Kitchens' 25th anniversary on Saturday...

There are four chilli powders available: Chipotle, Ancho, Guajillo and the extremely hot Bhut Jolokia. Skirt steaks with red currant, shallot and port sauce

Skirt has traditionally been only used for slow cooked dishes, but with a little care this relatively inexpensive piece of beef makes the juiciest steak. I recently cooked it for a couple on holiday in Devon and they raved about it. Serve it with roasted potato wedges, and whatever green vegetable is in season. The redcurrant sauce worked really well with the meat. Onglot, which is very similar to skirt, can be cooked in the same way. I got my meat from Pipers Farm shop in Magdalen Road, where they will know exactly what you are...

Yo Sushi due to open in Exeter on 22nd November

Work is coming on apace at the site of Yo! Sushi, due to open in Exeter's Princesshay shopping centre on 22nd November according to the restaurant chain's Head Office in London. The timing couldn't be better, as it coincides with the Christmas Lights switch on featuring Exeter's own celebrity chef Michael Caines from Abode at the Royal Clarence and the Military Wives Choir, which has gained worldwide acclaim and performed at the launch of this year's Poppy Appeal.

Founded in 1997, YO! Sushi brought the concept of a Japanese ‘kaiten’ sushi bar that delivered food to...

Extended opening hours for the Real Food Café

The Open Space evening held at the Real Food Café on the 15th October and attended by around 20 members of the team - staff, volunteers and directors - brought up some fantastic ideas for improving how the team work at Real Food, which they have set about implementing straight away. One idea that was picked up and considered intently, was the possibility of re-opening the Café on Mondays and earlier each morning.

Following three weeks of increased trade in both the Café and Store, it made absolute sense to at least trial this for a period, and so, from 5th November they...
