Mulled Devon cider This was inspired by a mulled cider Barny Butterfield served up at Crediton Farmers Market last year. 2 litres Sandford Orchards scrumpy cider 1 lemon, thinly peeled, peel only 1 cinnamon stick 1/2 a nutmeg, grated 2 tablespoons juniper berries, slightely crushed Mix all the ingredients together in a saucepan and warm without boiling. Modern Diner to launch first restaurant in Exeter

Modern Diners Ltd is to launch its first restaurant, RUBY, in Exeter after securing the lease of a central city location.

The freehold of the Grade II Listed property at 74 Queen Street was sold to its current owners in early 2012 and Christie + Co, which completed the sale, was recently appointed to find a lessee.

The agent said there had been "much interest" for the property, which has a sub-divided basement area and an open-plan ground floor with a mezzanine level. The site formerly traded as a delicatessen and licensed restaurant.

Ditch the drink for a month - pledge for Devon's drinkers

Drinkers in Devon are being encouraged to make a pledge to give up alcohol for a month in January, as part of the national Alcohol Awareness week (19th-25th November).

Devon County Council and NHS Devon have given their support to the campaign, being run by Alcohol Concern, which this year focuses on the theme: "it’s time to talk about drinking".
