Top chefs share industry secrets at city hotel

Passionate foodies will tomorrow be descending on The Magdalen Chapter in Exeter for the first of its monthly Cooks' Clubs.

These events are new for 2013 and are scheduled to take place on the last Friday of every month.

Guests can take a monthly voyage with Head Chef Ben Bulger and the team as they explore some of the very best seasonal ingredients. Cooks Club is a friendly affair where guests can enjoy a demonstration followed by a glass of fizz and a two course lunch.

New RUBY Modern Diner all set to open a week today

Offering a modern twist to the roots of the American diner, RUBY Modern Diner is set to open its doors on 28th January. Owners Dicky Harrison and Erin Allgrove have spent a year building the Modern Diner concept. They’ve sourced the best produce the region has to offer to build a unique menu including smoky pulled pork, hot salt beef, real hamburgers, homemade waffles and fresh bagels.

Farmhouse Breakfast Week is an annual celebration championing the importance of breakfast, which aims to get the nation to Shake Up Their Wake Up! 47% of people regularly skip breakfast during the week, so the aim is to encourage people to enjoy a healthy breakfast more regularly.

Managed by HGCA, the campaign started in 2000 and takes place every January. It is more successful each year with over 1,000 events and promotions taking place in 2012.

A warming pork recipe with Devon cider

A couple of weeks ago I cooked this at a demonstration marking the opening of the Kitchen Studio in Exmouth. And then last Friday I was reminded of it at the wassailing evening at The Lamb in Sandford. This old Devon ceremony is held to encourage a good apple harvest and involves 'watering' an apple tree with cider and shouting to keep evil spirits away from the orchard trees.

To encourage the apple trees I cooked this warming dish which uses a local cider, preferbly Sandford Orchards' scrumpy, which has lovely layers of flavour and cooks very well. (It also 'drinks' quite well...

Exeter Festival of Winter Ales at the Park

After the roaring success of last year’s event, the Exeter & East Devon branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) are once again hosting their Festival of Winter Ales at St James Park this weekend.

The 24th edition of the festival is taking place on the evenings of Friday 18th and Saturday 19th January, open from 11am–11pm on both days. Admission is £2, or CAMRA members can enter for free. Students can also enter for free with a valid NUS after 5pm on Saturday.

Like previous festivals, CAMRA is providing over 60 beers that are produced solely in the winter months....

Devon Coffee, the new speciality coffee shop in Queen Street, Exeter, has been included in The Independent's Top 50 Coffee Shops. Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood, one of the judges and the UK Barista champion/owner of Colonna & Smalls, called Coffee Devon: “A classic independent coffee shop in the centre of Exeter.
