An unusual outside mobile catering service made its debut at the recent Honiton Sausage and Cider Festival.

And despite the rain that fell over the weekend, the Rusty Pig’s ethically produced sausages and wood-fired pulled pork cooked in a converted cattle trailer went down a storm with festivalgoers.

Rusty Pig owner, Robin Rea said: “I’ve been thinking about a mobile catering facility for a while and the Sausage and Cider Festival gave me the impetus I needed to build it.

“I found a cattle trailer that had seen better days and decided to install a wood fired oven – in my opinion this style of cooking really adds to the flavour of the meat.”

Robin also wanted the option of cooking pizzas in the trailer, and called upon the talents of Somerset designer Ben Pike of 365 Outdoor Designs to create a bespoke oven. Ben, a garden designer by trade, has already designed and built large mobile ovens for a number of farmers markets.

As with all the Rusty Pig’s endeavours, the food served by Rusty Pig on the Road is created from ethical and locally sourced ingredients.

The cattle trailer complete with oven has already been booked for a number of events including a wedding and summer party. www.rustypig.co.uk
