Chunk of Devon celebrates awards success

Chunk of Devon is celebrating after maintaining their crown as the UK’s tastiest pasty and pie supplier by scooping a further 10 awards from foodies at the Taste of the West Awards bringing their award tally to 88.

The company, with a dedicated local team of 40 and is based in Ottery St Mary, has won more awards across its range of pies, pasties, pork pies and sausage rolls than any other similar operation in the country. Chunk have always insisted on using real food, ingredients sourced locally, packed with British free range and high welfare meats, fabulous buttery pastry and all recipes free from silly additives.

The supremo pasty and pie maker wowed the judges at this year’s British Pie Awards winning 5 golds and then a further 10 at the Taste of the West awards. 3 golds, 2 silver and 5 highly commended. Its Steak Pasty now has a whopping 15 awards, including winning Britain’s Best Pasty, making it the most coveted product in the range.

Taste of the West is a unique membership organisation for food and drink providers, throughout Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. Established in 1991 and now with over 1,000 members it is the largest independent regional food group in the UK with the largest regional awards programme.

Suzi – from Chunk - says: “We have always been successful in these awards but this is the largest haul we have had to date – We are absolutely thrilled - It is a huge result – we have never won so many in any competition. To win 10 in these particular awards in the same year we celebrate our 10th birthday really is the cherry on top of the …pie!”

Chunk produces over 40,000 pies and pasties a week and is stocked in heaps of farm shops, delis and independents, from small corners shops to large ones such as Harrods and events such as Wimbledon, MCC and premiership Rugby.

With a background in catering, Simon had a real desire to create a range of products that would challenge the stereotype of the unhealthy, stodgy pie. He explains: “We wanted to offer cracking, top quality, tasty products, without being pompous! Our rustic pies and pasties are bold on flavor and jam packed with locally sourced goodness. I’m proud to say Chunk prove this and are they are practically sin free – not a drop of sugar!”

A quirky brand and happy to break the mold, Chunk is also passionate about the whole process of food production and its future, acting as a thought leader on issues such as ‘Butter vs Margarine’ and Gluten Free.

Simon adds: “I think it is important to be up to speed with changes in the industry and I want to make sure that Chunk is constantly evolving. I relish researching food trends and this knowledge informs product development for the benefit of product and ultimately customers.”

The company’s forward thinking attitude seems to have paid dividends with their continued award successes. Suzi exclaims: “We are all really enthusiastic about what we do and hope that this is evident in the items we produce.”
