The Day We Played Brazil

The Day we Played Brazil celebrates the 100th anniversary of the football match between Exeter City and the Brazil national team - the first-ever game played by Brazil. Based on the extraordinary true story of Exeter City FC's tour to South America in 1914 this musical play is performed by 100 local people telling the stories of the players and their wives, sweethearts and families back home. With plenty of music, tears and laughter along the way, as well as some great footballing moments, it's a story of adventure and excitement both on and off the pitch that will take the audience through the highs and lows of the hundred years in Exeter since the outbreak of the Great War. Rossini Re-Loaded

The Big Band meets Grand Opera. Jazz and Rock variations on themes from the operas of Gioacchino Rossini featuring William Tell, The Barber of Seville, Othello, Cinderella and The Thieving Magpie. The Importance of Being Earnest
Saturday, 6pm, Castle Drogo
An evening of wit and humour as The Hatherleigh Players put on a 1920s version of Oscar Wilde’s classic 1895 comedy The Importance of Being Earnest. All proceeds from the performance will be split between The Hatherleigh Players and the ‘Save castle Drogo’ project. Gates open at 6pm, and the performance starts at 6.30pm.Come rain or shine, the performance will take place in the beautiful Castle Drogo gardens. Don’t forget to bring a picnic, something to sit on and plenty of sunshine. Tickets are available from Richard Tidball Insurance Services in Hatherleigh, and the Castle Drogo shop. Branscombe Festival

Over three days Branscombe Festival presents performances from leading classical and jazz musicians, including stars of the international opera stage Ailish Tynan and Luis Gomes, dance band The Leo Green Experience, vocal ensemble I Fagiolini, cellist Philip Higham and the UK’s only fully professional ragtime band, Albert Ball’s Flying Aces with guest vocalist Patricia Hammond, culminating in a free concert by the Band of the Royal Marines on Branscombe beach. Chulmleigh Old Fair

This ancient West Country Fair has taken place each year under Royal Charter signed by King Henry 111 in 1253 and is run on a ‘not for profit basis’ by a Committee with volunteer helpers. Thursday is mainly a Sports Day for All with money prizes, field sports, Tennis and Badminton Tournament for juniors. There is also a local history walk led by the Town Crier in the afternoon and a children’s party in the evening. Friday is mainly a ‘horsey day’ with a morning Horse Show,afternoon Gymkhana and a Car and Horsey Boot Sale held on a local field. Antiques Afternoon in the Town Hall, Clay Pigeon Shoot and Six a Side Football in the evening. Saturday – Fancy Dress Parade, Street Entertainment, Fun and Games in the Street including sticky bun race, apple bobbing, ski race etc. Tug of War, Open Road Race ending with dancing in the street. www.chulmleigh.org/

Ex Libris Festival

To celebrate Chagford’s literary heritage, Ex Libris, an exhibition of written works, illustrated with flowers is being held, Friday and Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 11am-5pm. The exhibition will recognise those who have provided readers and performers with words and ideas for information and for pleasure, and will continue to provide pleasure and interest for the visitors as they browse among the books and flowers. Detached and Timeless
RAMM, Queen Street, Exeter
This exhibition explores how artists have been inspired by landscapes, nature and the seasons. Imaginary and mystical places have provided the stimulus for several of the exhibited artists; others have been inspired by Westcountry locations. Some touch on themes of spirituality and paganism. The Day We Played Brazil exhibition

To tie in with the musical The Day We Played Brazil, Exeter City Football Club's unique history is celebrated in an exhibition at the theatre, which commemorates their match against the Brasileiros XI in June 1914. The official exhibition is accompanied by a stunning display of artwork created by young people from the Clyst Vale Learning Community and is on view until Saturday 2 August. You can view the exhibition between 10am and 6pm Monday to Saturday and Sunday an hour before the show starts. www.thedayweplayedbrazil.com
Wyn Appleford - Painting for Pleasure

Painting for pleasure is an exhibition of paintings by local artist, Wyn Appleford, inspired by her travels in Britain and abroad, many with a maritime theme. The exhibition can be seen, free of charge, in the stable and award winning tearooms at A la Ronde near Exmouth utnil 30 July, 10.30am–5pm.
