The Great Gatsby

It’s the 1920’s, the age of jazz and women’s independence; when wealth, glamour and decadence ignited public fascination for a fleeting moment in time. Jay Gatsby embraced the era as he set about acquiring all the trappings of a self-made millionaire. His biggest conquest was the young socialite, Daisy. For years, Gatsby is passionate in his pursuit of her love until it all ends tragically in this classic study of American society in the early 20th century. Honiton Players Drama Group: Four Original One-Act Plays

Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory: As You Like It

Expelled from the city, Rosalind and Orlando – the one fleeing a tyrranous uncle, the other a murderous brother – rediscover each other in the Forest of Arden. But what awaits them in that Arcadian wilderness? Will they find true love, or just lose themselves? Are they merely players in a pastoral fantasy, or do they have a real and rare opportunity – to explore the reality of their feelings free from all the normal constrictions of courtly convention and parental oversight? Jonny Dyer & Vicki Swan with Marilyn Tucker & Paul Wilson

A Midsummer Concert

Volunteers from Devon Wildlife Trust’s East Devon Local Group have come together with the musical talents of Axe Valley Community Choir to stage A Midsummer Concert to raise funds for a new Jurassic Coast visitor centre. Refreshments will be available including homemade cakes and there will be a raffle. Tickets are £5 in advance or £7 on the door. World cup fever with Diamondogz

Glam rock band Diamondogz will be playing from 8pm until 10.30pm, before England face Italy at 11pm in their first fixture of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Make a night of it at SJP! Tickets are just £5 and can be bought in advance via Reception at St James Park or by emailingred.army@exetercityfc.co.uk – alternatively you can buy on the door. The night is being used as a fundraiser for the Red Army junior supporters' club and the Light Up the Park initiative to replace the floodlights at St James Park, run by the Supporters' Trust.

‘The Ritz’ Comes to Exeter Castle

Beach Time Summer Fete

A fun-filled afternoon is promised on 14 June when the Friends of Woodwater Academy hold a Beach-time Summer Fete. There will be plenty going on to keep the whole family entertained including displays and attractions including pony rides, bouncy castle, surf simulator, silent auction, coconut shy, hoopla, draw tickets, colour stall, face painting, refreshments and lots more. The Carnivale of The Peculiar

Crediton Food Festival 2014

EXHIBITIONS

Anne Deeming
Exeter Phoenix
A new, site specific, sculptural installation by Anne Deeming who designs and makes objects that look familiar and usable in some way – and yet are not. Her works exist as amalgamations of everyday utilitarian objects with features that can trigger multiple associations with something the viewer has used or seen before. She is interested in the areas of slippage between the familiar and foreign, domestic and industrial, the useful and useless. Anne’s work is on show until 12 July. www.exeterphoenix.org.uk

Exeter Samaritans Art and Craft Exhibition
St Stephen's Church, High Street, Exeter
Exeter Samaritans are mounting an Art and Craft exhibition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first telephone line going live in 1964. You can join in the celebrations by adding your thoughts and sketches to a continuum board, putting a stitch to a wall hanging and taking part in a knitting demonstration. The event is on from 10am-4pm on Friday and 10am-3pm on Saturday. Admission is free, tea/coffee and home-made cakes will be available.

Exhibition: Annabel Hanson
Exeter Cathedral
Having studied printmaking for 6 years, Annabel has started painting again. She is particularly interested in the farm animals in and around Whitestone (near Exeter) and in the surrounding countryside where she lives. Annabel uses vibrant colours and a bold technique to capture the beauty of nature. Her work is on display until December.

Fijian Art
RAMM, Queen Street, Exeter
A display of RAMM’s Fijian objects with new interpretation by the Fijian Art Research Project. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and based at the University of East Anglia, the project is enthusiastically supported by the Fiji High Commission in London and the National Museum of Fiji. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm except bank holidays.
