WBW Solicitors sent a crack team from their Exeter office to make a bid for the title of World Champions – in the field of pancake racing.

The global flip-off took place in Exeter's Princesshay Square on Tuesday (February 17), and four of WBW's finest lawyers banded together under the team name “Flippin' Lawyers” in a bid to outrun and outflip the competition.

Partner of WBW and team captain, David Charlesworth, said before the challenge: “We are feeling a little bit tense, this represents months and months of training and we take it very seriously.” Fellow team members, Laura Brutti, Helen Whyte and Petina Murray, all flipped their utmost during the race.

Fifteen teams competed in the rigorous challenge which included a knock-out relay race made up of teams from local businesses, organisations, shops and charities. Contestants stopped to toss their pancake four times before passing the pan to the next runner.

Sadly, WBW did not manage to scoop the top prize, but it was not about athletic glory for the competitors taking part; the event was staged to raise funds for Age UK Exeter, the race's nominated charity this year.

Crowdcube emerged as the winners with team captain saying: "It’s the single most important achievement of my life.”

This is the second time Exeter has hosted the World Pancake Racing Championships: last year the title was clinched by a team from Sandander, with the event raising £2800 for Dream-A-Way and other local charities; this year's fundraising total is yet to be announced.
