Whether it's a spot of theatre that takes your fancy or you just want to have a good old guffaw at some of the region's best undiscovered comedy talent, don't plan your weekend until you have checked out our essential guide to what's on in and around ‪Exeter... ‬

THEATRE

The Mikado
Friday & Saturday, Barnfield Theatre, Exeter

St David’s Players present one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s best known works. The wandering minstrel son of the Mikado falls for and flirts with a girl who is engaged to her guardian Ko-Ko. Unfortunately the Mikado has decreed that flirting is punishable by death and Ko-Ko, who has been appointed Lord High Executioner, must find someone to execute before the Mikado’s forthcoming visit! Go along to find out what happens and enjoy some wonderful singing and a hilarious plot, which is suitable for all the family. 7.30pm daily with a 2.30pm matinee on Saturday. Jekyll and Hyde

Four of Swords Theatre invites you on a daring expedition into the deepest darkness of the human soul with spectacular video projection and haunting live music set within the House. TORO! TORO!

Young Antonito lives an idyllic life on his parents' cattle farm in southern Spain. But the peace is shattered when he realises that his favourite bull-calf, brave Paco, is destined to fight in the bullring. Taking both their destinies into his own hands, and risking the lives and love of his family, Antonito hatches a daring plan. BBC Radio 2 Best Folk Duo Whiles and Matthews charity concert
Friday, 7.30pm, St Luke’s Science and Sports College, Harts Lane, Exeter
BBC Radio 2 Best Folk Duo Chris White and Julie Matthews include a concert at St Luke's as part of their latest tour. Refreshments will be available. All profits from the fantastic evening will be donated to two charities: Bliss and Cancer Research UK. Swinging His Praises
Saturday, 7.30pm, Exeter Cathedral
Exeter Chamber Choir and AJ's Big Band in a concert of special jazz music in the city's cathedral. Swinging His Praises is a "Mass for Life". This jazz mass is written by the choir's musical director Andrew Daldorph and features jazz psalms and other songs.  The evening promises to celebrate life and God - in the most foot-tapping way imaginable! Eats Everything

JamTheChannel celebrate seven years of bringing underground electronic music to Exeter’s fields, boats, terraces, clubs, basement’s & beer gardens with Eats Everything.  Eats Everything (Dirtybird/Futureboogie/Hypercolour) is at the forefront of a new wave of talented producers coming out of Bristol. In a matter of months he has defined a whole new genre of forward-thinking underground house music that draws elements from classic house, UK bass music, Detroit techno, jungle and early rave. Aving a Giraffe

Aving a Giraffe is a unique comedy challenge, aimed at showcasing some of the region's best undiscovered comedy talent. Participants at the event will each have just two minutes to show off their skills and make you laugh, all with the added pressure of a high profile judging panel. Oxjam warm-up event

Keep an eye out for The Exeter Daily gazebo in Bedford Square on Saturday and come and say Hi, as the Oxjam crew will be on hand to offer entertainment in abundance and information on what is going to be taking place next weekend at the Oxjam's Takeover Weekend.

Exmouth Illuminated Carnival and Fun Day
Saturday, Exmouth
Carnival fun starts at 9am in The Strand where you'll find numerous stalls selling various goodies, face painting, a bouncy castle, entertainment running throughout the day and lots, lots more. The illuminated carnival procession starts at 7.30pm from Imperial Road. It will travel along Marine Way into Exeter Road, and then The Parade before finishing at the roundabout by KFC & Capels.  The least crowded viewing areas will be along Marine Way. RSPB charity Fire Walk
Saturday, 7pm, Princesshay Square, Exeter
Go along and offer your support as participants bare their soles to raise funds to help protect local wildlife and wild paces.

Killerton’s Big Pick Up

The orchards at Killerton Estate are full to bursting this autumn. On Sunday families are invited to head into the orchard to help collect up apples to be pressed for Killerton’s award-winning cider. There will be mini wheelbarrows for the children and free cider tasters in the orchard for the adults. Budleigh Salterton Food & Drink Festival

So what's the recipe for the weekend? Take over 25 local producers both inside the Public Hall and outside at the farmers market, offering a great mix of the finest local produce. Add to that hot local food offered from our fantastic hot food kitchen where on the menu you'll find a great range of easy to eat food for all the family! Add into that some great drinks from the finest local drink producers. Stir in a large measure of great live music, child friendly entertainment and a fun, friendly, relaxed atmosphere....  And there you have it! EXHIBITIONS

Vivien Leigh Exhibition
Topsham Museum, Exeter
The museum hosts a poignant and special exhibition celebrating the centenary of the birth of Vivien Leigh, featuring the famous nightdress Vivien wore in Gone with the Wind. The collection will be enhanced with an evening and day dress on loan from the RAMM and additional items from Bill Douglas Centre and Bristol Theatre Museum. The exhibition runs until 27 October.

Masters of the Moor: William and FJ Widgery
RAMM, Queen Street, Exeter
The scenery of Dartmoor and South Devon as depicted by father and son landscape painters William and FJ Widgery who both painters lived and worked in Devon throughout their careers.  The exhibition runs until 27 October and the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday 10am-5pm www.rammuseum.org.uk

Exeter Contemporary Open 2013
Exeter Phoenix
The annual chance to see a selection of work by some of the most talented emerging artists from across the UK and beyond. Artists this year include Charlie Godet Thomas, Rachl Busby, Rebecca Ounstead, Max Cahn, Julie Price, Anne Deeming, Malina Busch,  Oliver Tirre and Hannah Mooney.
