As a capital city and one of the only two cities in the county of Devon, Exeter certainly doesn’t have a shortage of activities and attractions for visitors. However, most of these activities come with a steeper price tag compared to other destinations in the south-west of England. As such, if you’re looking to visit the city on a budget, you might consider taking advantage of the coast and green space that surround Exeter. From walking and cycling to visiting cathedrals and museums, here are some of the best ways to have fun on a budget in Exeter.

Relax Along Exeter Quay

One free way to have fun in Exeter is to take an afternoon stroll alongside Exeter Quay. The perfect time to walk along the quay and enjoy the eateries and coffee shops would be on a warm sunny day. You can cool down in the sea breeze and take memorable pictures in some of the most photogenic spots you've ever seen.

Visit the Royal Albert Memorial Museum

If you visit Exeter during less favourable weather, then your shot at having fun might come from visiting a museum. The museum was renovated a few years ago and offers two floors of fun for all ages. Visitors can see everything from displays about the natural world to ancient Roman artefacts. The best part is that the Royal Albert Memorial Museum is free to visit. Of course, some sections require an entrance fee, and you can always leave a donation. You can visit the museum several times and be pleasantly surprised by something new each time.

Appreciate Nature in Haldon Forest

One of the things most people love about Exeter is that, although it's a relatively big city, it's closer to nature than you'd expect. For example, you can find several day trips that'll take you from Exeter to the seaside in less than half an hour by train. If you'd like to indulge yourself in a bit of nature, then you'll find the Haldon Forest to be an excellent hiking place. The Haldon Obelisk is one of the best walks you can take once you're out there. It was initially created to assist sailors who were navigating along the Exe Estuary. However, it's now entirely covered by trees.

The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum

The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum is one of the best-kept secrets when it comes to fun things to do on a budget in Exeter. The museum is situated in the University of Exeter’s old library and comprises a massive array of 17th-century visual exhibitions, as well as some images and toys.

Hang Out At the Cathedral Green

Although you’ll have to pay a small entrance fee, hanging out at the Cathedral Green is one of the best ways to spend time in the Devonian city of Exeter. Underneath the Green lies one of the most intriguing Roman baths that are still available in Britain. Today, you can go to the Green and relax with friends, or enjoy a picnic and appreciate the simple pleasures of life. The Green is in the middle of the city and is surrounded by pedestrian lanes. Within a few steps of the grassy lawn, you can also find several bookstores, hotels, and eating spots.

Go Online

The weather in England is notoriously unpredictable, and you might find yourself unable to go out once in a while. In any case, not everyone enjoys traipsing around monuments or galleries in search of freebie entertainment. Some people prefer getting them online through cashback offers or even free spins. In fact, many operators on gamble.xyz offer no deposit bonuses and other advantageous promotions. You can enjoy a good game of Blackjack or a long spinning session of some exciting slots game. Who knows, you might even end the day with an extra quid or two that you didn’t have in the morning.

Visit One of the other Churches

The main church in Exeter is the one that titles the settlement as a city. If you have several other people when you visit, the entrance fee could be extremely steep. Fortunately, there are several other churches around even the unlikeliest parts of the city. Some of the visitor favourites include the iconic St Martin's Church that you can find on the corner of St Pancras Church and the Cathedral Green.

Red Coat Walking Tour

Last but not least, history buffs will enjoy the free guided walks that the Exeter City council offers around the city on certain days of the week. The tours are run by experienced volunteers, so you're guaranteed to learn almost everything about the history and current state of the city.
