Local writer Clive Essame is working with charity CEDA (Community Equality Disability Action) to develop an exciting play set in the African wilderness. The play is about acceptance and is told by the characters all of which are African animals.

The play Impisi will be performed at Exmouth Pavilion on March 12th at 7pm.

Clive writes about disability, difference and acceptance using different African animals to bring the tale to life. Clive is passionate about helping to create a society that is knowledgeable about disability and creates a level playing field for all.

Clive has first hand experience of living with a disability; Clive was born with Spina Bifida and uses a wheelchair when out and about. Clive has not been held back by his disability and has worked all of his adult life, he is also involved with a range community action projects and groups which help people to reach their full potential.

Clive said: ‘’My experience of having a disability has shown me that not everyone in society knows how to react to a disabled person. There is sadly a lack of understanding of disability and many people face discrimination due to their disability. Impisi also shows how self image and determination affects how people with disabilities get on in life.’’

Impisi is an entertaining and funny story with an important moral message. The play will be performed by actors from CEDA, an organisation which aims to “create opportunities for disabled people”.

Clive said: ‘’I hope that people will leave the play with a more positive attitude towards disability and difference, and increased understanding of disability. The actual process of bringing Impisi to the stage has highlighted the fact that; with determination, opportunity and appropriate support; people with disabilities can achieve an enormous amount – in exactly the same way as everyone in society can. ’’

Tickets for the play are available to purchase on the Exmouth Pavilion website www.ledleisure.co.uk/exmouth-pavilion/whats-on or over the phone 01395 222 477.
