An exciting development for folk music in Exeter
Devon based folk music organisation Wren Music launches a new collaboration with Exeter’s Cygnet theatre this week with the opening night in the ‘Wren Presents . . .’ season with Scottish Folk Singer and fiddle player Mairi Campbell in concert with Nick Wyke and Becki Driscoll on Friday 28 March at 7.30pm.
Award winning singer songwriter Mairi Campbell makes a welcome return to Devon, and she blends her distinctive vocals and skilled fiddle playing to create a haunting collection of songs and tunes for her concert. Mairi may be best remembered for her rendition of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ where she had gone back to Robert Burns’ manuscripts and found his original tune! Later this song was featured in the film ‘Sex and the City’.
Nick Wyke & Becki Driscoll are highly respected musicians, composers and workshop leaders from North Devon. They have made a strong impact on the British folk scene and received national and international acclaim. Their passion for English traditional music and the violin has led to the development of their unique style. Becki's melodic, emotive violin and viola blend with Nick's driving fiddle chords and powerful vocals to create a rich, captivating sound.
‘Wren Presents . . .’ is a specialist folk programme for the Cygnet Theatre bringing some of the best traditional music performers in the UK and combining with the excellent musicians that make up the Wren team.
“We are very pleased to create this partnership between with Cygnet Theatre, building on their existing folk programme by adding the rich mix of the Wren team, some of the finest folk practitioners living and working here in Devon’ says Wren Music’s artistic director Marilyn Tucker.
