A new music project based in Axminster aims to strike a chord with young people from across East Devon by offering free music making sessions.

Soundwaves is for young people aged 11 to 19 who play an instrument, DJ, or sing – or would like to.

“We welcome everybody, whatever their level of musical experience, style or interest,” says professional musician Pete Wild, Soundwaves’ music leader. “We are keen to work with everybody – from very experienced musicians to those who have not had opportunities to play an instrument, but feel they would like to have a go in a relaxed, creative and friendly environment.”

Pete will be working with Axminster-based rapper/beatboxer Dean Skinner, singer/musician Jacques Verhaeren from local band Papa Le Gal and greeter Polly Wild developing ideas generated by young people attending the course to see where they lead.

“I’m thrilled to be working on Soundwaves in my home town where music opportunities for this kind of creative expression are incredibly limited for young people,” says Dean Skinner.

“It’s amazing how quickly young people can come up with a cool guitar riff, a couple of lines of vocals or a catchy keyboard line if they just have a go,” adds Pete.

Funded by Youth Music and being run by B Sharp, the Lyme Regis-based music charity for DAISI, the Devon Arts in Education charity working with Axe Valley Community College, Soundwaves is offering young people in challenging circumstances the chance to make music with others.

“B Sharp music leaders have years of experience running music sessions for young people and many of us have extensive experience as professional musicians,” explains Pete. “There is a shared philosophy of building confidence in young people through music.”

All Soundwaves sessions are free and take place at Pippins Community Centre every Friday from February 27 to April 10, running from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
