Year 8 students from West Exe School marked the start of the National Year of Reading 2026 with an inspiring live session from children’s author Tom Palmer.

Threat to science due to lack of funding within schools

Recent budget cuts have proposed a threat to science in schools and the science industry as a whole. This will have a knock on effect to the accessibility of Science focused careers. The slow decline of science lessons in schools has been apparent over the past few years and a recent report from Ofsted* found that the quality of practical science in schools needed revising. British Biology Olympiad success for Exeter pupils

Ten Exeter School pupils have been awarded medals in the demanding British Biology Olympiad in which over 7,000 pupils took part, with one Upper Sixth pupil qualifying for the next round. Upper Sixth pupil Suraj Ghandi scored the top mark in school and is one of the top 150 pupils in the country. Head Girl Rebecca Richardson also achieved a gold medal. Third of SW parents want their children to have a professional career

A third (33 per cent) of South West parents want their children to have professional careers, a poll from Action for Children has revealed with two thirds (65 per cent) wanting their children to go to university once their compulsory education is completed.

The results are from a survey of over 2000 parents across the UK, with the South West subsample showing that the second most popular sector behind professional was public services (11.7 per cent).

It may not be very far from Bristol to mid Devon. But it’s a big cultural shift to move from the headship of a large urban primary in Bristol to the leadership of three village schools in mid Devon. However, that’s just what John Jolliffe has done.

Blundell’s Chemists to represent West region - again

Three Year 12 pupils at Blundell’s School, Tiverton, will be representing the West at the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Schools’ Analyst national final, having just won the regional heat.

The team of Yuli Lu, Francis Huntingford and Toby Whitehead finished first in the Western Region, ahead of schools such as Exeter, Cheltenham Ladies College and Bristol Grammar School. It’s the second successive year that a Blundell’s team has won this event, which is organised by the RSC Analytical Division for first year sixth form students studying chemistry.
