Study throws light on school absences

A study commissioned by Devon County Council has looked into the reasons why some children miss school due to anxiety.

The findings are helping the Council provide practical advice and information to schools in order that they can better support students, enabling them to keep up their attendance.

Educational Psychologists conducted the study as part of a wider exploration of ‘anxiety based school avoidance’ across Devon.

Exeter to host new deaf-inclusive active outdoors club

On Wednesday 8 June, from 7-9pm, local charity Exeter Deaf Academy is inviting Deaf people and their families to a free opening of the new Active Outdoors Community Club, at Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre, on Exeter Quay.

Thanks to funding from Awards for All England, who have awarded a lottery grant of £4,655 towards this yearlong community project, the new Deaf-inclusive club will be offering taster sessions of canoeing, kayaking, archery, sailing and caving in an accessible environment.

Exeter students receive mentoring from world class athletes

Students at an Exeter school will receive transformational mentoring from world class athletes, as part of an innovative new project to support young people facing disadvantage in isolated areas of the country. Year 10 pupils at Exeter School took part in an improvisation workshop delivered by professional actress and Webber Douglas graduate, Lucy Curtin, last week.

The workshop proved an ideal preparation for a day of workshops organised by the Northcott theatre taking place on Friday 24 June.

Devon’s biggest reading challenge starts next month

An exciting reading challenge, designed to improve literacy levels in primary school children across the country is coming to Devon next month. Upper Sixth pupils at Exeter School took part in the Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad with four Silver and eight Bronze prizes awarded.

The international competition was the 48th UK Chemistry Olympiad.

'ThinkBIG' challenge sees Cornish pupils win £500 for their school

Two Cornish schools have won £500 following ThinkBIG – a 'Dragons Den' style contest for primary school children held by The Cornwall Association of Primary Heads (CAPH), in partnership with the Education team at law firm, Michelmores.

Winners Kehelland Village School in Camborne and Lanner Primary School in Redruth impressed the judging panel with their innovative ideas on how they would spend £500 to improve one aspect of school life.
