Pride and Celebration: Isca Academy Hosts Civic Awards for Local Young Changemakers

Young people from across Devon were recognised for their commitment to citizenship, leadership and community service at a special Torbay and Devon Civic Award ceremony held at Isca Academy this month.

The event, which celebrates the achievements of Year 6 pupils who have gone above and beyond in helping others, brought together proud students, families, and staff from schools across the region to acknowledge months of voluntary service and personal growth.

Professor Janice Kay, Provost and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter, has been appointed to the high-level Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) panel.

Professor Kay has been chosen as one of a highly select group of leading UK academics to sit on the influential panel, appointed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

More than 1,200 applications were received for the roles available on the panel, which also includes students, employers and widening participation experts from a wide range of different organisations.

Exeter College has been named as the number one further education college in the South West for its Apprenticeship programme for 2016.

The Skills Funding Agency also placed the college within the top ten of Further Education College’s in the UK, with record breaking success rates of 86% propelling them to the top of the regional table. It comes as the college recently welcomed the next generation of Apprentices who have started on the college’s award-winning Apprenticeship programme.

Parents struggle with science and technology

With pupils still settling in to the new school year, recent research released by E.ON highlights that science remains a subject that leaves many parents stumped when it comes to helping with homework. Pupils swap pens and pads for pedal power

Pupils from Teignbridge schools have been keeping fit and swapping desks for bikes as part of a programme of activities geared up for the Tour of Britain’s visit to the district.

Funded by Teignbridge District Council, independent cycle trainer Martin Burrows visited youngsters from Teign School and Coombeshead Academy in the lead up to the Devon stage of the Tour. A medical student’s dedication and life-saving first aid skills have won him the St John Ambulance Volunteer of the Year award.

Luke Tester, a student at the University of Exeter Medical School, said he was “stunned” to win the award, in a ceremony hosted by Myleene Klass.

A world-leading diabetes expert at the University of Exeter Medical School has won a top international Diabetes prize, for understanding and improving care in genetic diabetes worldwide.

Excellent GCSE results for Exeter School

Exeter School pupils, parents and staff are celebrating another year of consistently high GCSE results.

82% of all grades were A* or A and 49.8% of grades were A*. Seventy-two candidates scored 8 or more A*/A grades with 42 registering 10 or more A*/A grades.

After the success of last week’s A-Level results, The Maynard School is thrilled to have posted yet another outstanding set of results at GCSE level.

Students at the South West’s leading independent school for girls have outperformed the national average to an extraordinary extent with 66% achieving A* and A grades and 91% gaining A*, A and B grades across a broad spectrum of subjects.

By contrast, nationally the GCSE results show the sharpest decline on record and the national average for A* - C grades is only 66.9%, proving just how well the Maynard girls have done....
