Find World Book Day costumes for free in Devon libraries

Libraries Unlimited is partnering with Recycle Devon to bring World Book Day costume swap rails to 15 libraries in Devon. World Book Day 2026 is Thursday, 5th March and library swap rails are running from 16th February to 8th March. Customers are invited to donate outgrown, unwanted children’s costumes in good, wearable condition. Costumes will be available to take home for free!

Exeter Deaf Academy Get Set To Make A Change

Six students from Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education will be getting involved in the “Get Set to Make a Change” initiative managed by the British Olympic Association and the British Paralympic Association.

Six students attended a roadshow yesterday (28 November) where they met both an Olympian and Paralympian. They will also learn how to plan, organise and deliver community projects and events inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games

Exeter School to stage show in new-look hall

The latest phase of improvements to Exeter School has now come to an end with the inauguration of the enlarged dining hall and its smart copper-clad façade.

The newly extended School Hall will be used to its full capacity this week with the Senior School Production of ‘An Italian Straw Hat’ running 28 – 30 November.

Forty pupils from local primary schools "took over" East Devon District Council for a day and had a go at running things.

They even got a ‘taste’ of the work done by EDDC’s Environmental Health inspectors when they visited Sam ’n Ella’s kitchen at Knowle in Sidmouth for a food hygiene check.

On Friday 22 November pupils from the following five schools visited the Council’s HQ to learn more about its services and meet Staff and Councillors:

Southbrook School pupils are growing seasonal vegetables in their allotment and making soup for the homeless of Exeter. The Soup Kitchen at St David’s Church receives batches of nutritious soup from Southbrook which is distributed on Thursday evenings to the homeless.

Outstanding school brings learning alive

An East Devon primary has been rated as good with outstanding features for every aspect of school life.

Education inspectors have not visited Branscombe C of E Primary for five years because it has been doing so well.

In 2008 they judged it good and now they say it is performing well with some outstanding features. And that’s despite the inspection regime being toughened up in the meantime.

Last year the primary was judged outstanding by Diocese of Exeter inspectors for its work as a church school.

Students criticise university contact time

A new study on student perceptions by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) has highlighted the fact that a vast number of students are unhappy with the number of contact hours they receive at university.

Findings have shown that some have as little as two hours of lectures a week, which seems to be incredibly poor value for money, particularly with the recent rise in tuition fees. Exeter School has been named as one of the UK’s best schools on the Sunday Times Best Schools Guide.

The school came 81st on the league table list of 425 independent schools in the UK.

The rating came from the schools exam results which saw over 80% of its students get A* or A at GCSE and over 83% get A* to B in A-levels.

Children In Need Fundraising Total Announced

After the cosy day on Friday spent in our pyjamas, the total we raised is in, £110.55! Thanks to all who ate cake, had their hair done, played ping pong and guessed the baby photos. Our staff were once so adorable weren’t they?

Secretary of State for Education awards prizes for Exeter Mathematics School competition

The winners of a region-wide mathematics competition, run by Exeter Mathematics School, were awarded their prizes by the Secretary of State for Education, Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, in a ceremony held on Thursday 7 November at the Department for Education.

The overall winners, from The Royal High School, Bath, demonstrated their mathematical and communications skills by providinga solution to ‘Bezout’s Buckets’ in an entertaining fashion.

Exeter School pupil achieves highest marks in the country in A-Level Electronics and Applied Science

Exeter School pupil David Salmon achieved the highest marks in the country in A Level Electronics and Applied Science.

The 2013 Exeter School leaver received 595 UMS marks out of 600, the highest of all candidates who studied Electronics and Applied Science with the exam board, WJEC, in 2013.

The Chief Executive of WJEC, Mr Gareth Pierce, said this was an outstanding achievement and evidence of the hard work of David and his teachers in preparing him for the assessment.
