Devon’s first Women’s Cricket Academy in a state college setting launches

Exeter College has launched Devon’s first Women’s Cricket Academy based at a non‑fee‑paying college, offering an exceptional new opportunity for young female cricketers to develop their cricketing potential alongside their academic studies.

Ahead of a busy summer season the side is actively recruiting new players. This will begin with trials on Thursday 30 April at Buzz About Cricket’s indoor facility in Cullompton, and aspiring players joining the College this September are now being encouraged to register their interest.

Table cricket competition a big hit!

It was a boundary busting day of cricket as school teams from across the South West went head to head for the Table Cricket regional finals on 15 May.

Over 60 children flocked to the Sir Christopher Ondaatje Devon Cricket Centre, on the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus, for the event to play a specially adapted version of the sport which gives those with severe physical or learning disabilities the opportunity to compete.

Bicton helps farmers in Uganda

Bicton College is currently training international student Joseph Mugagga as one of seven delegates funded to learn in the UK by the Bicton Overseas Agricultural Trust. Joseph, from Kampala in Uganda, works as a Rural Project Manager for Kulika Uganda, an organisation set up to promote and train individuals in sustainable agriculture.

Farming needs new blood

Jess Bower, from Brixham has always kept horses but didn’t ever think she would have the chance to break into farming.

Now a full time agricultural student at Bicton and a steward at last week’s Devon County Show, Jess came to the College having had no prior experience of farming.

Bicton College student Melanie Cowlan completed Level I and 2 Fibrecraft in 2012. Majoring in a wide range of felt making techniques, Melanie has subsequently established a Fibrecraft enterprise and has recently resigned from her place of work in order to expand her business.

Josephine Drives Forward Centre of Excellence in Kenya

Bicton College student Josephine Yongo is currently experiencing her first visit to the UK, whilst undertaking a 6 week course organised by the Bicton Overseas Agricultural Trust (BOAT).

Studying a specially designed intensive course including project management, leadership and communication, Josephine and 6 fellow students are seizing the opportunity offered to them by BOAT so that they can return home and engage others in effective training.

Bicton dogs jump for joy at County Show

Dogs from Bicton College showed off their moves last week with agility demonstrations at the Devon County Show.

The team which included three rescue dogs, tackled obstacles including jumps, tunnels and weave poles, demonstrating speed and skill in the Lady Clinton ring.

Leading outdoor specialists launch children's campaign

Leading camping and outdoor brand Vango has joined forces with Britain’s biggest outdoor learning programme, the Natural Connections Project and The Camping and Caravanning Club, to launch a campaign to create fun and informative videos encouraging children to learn how to pitch a tent.

MORE than 175 apprenticeships are waiting to be snapped up by youngsters looking to start work after their exams this summer, it has been revealed.

School-leavers in Devon and Cornwall are being urged to avoid the post-exam rush and think now about securing an apprenticeship in their chosen career, and not wait until September.

Mark Boulting, managing director of Plymouth-based Skills Group, said: “Learners are in the driving seat right now. We have around 175 vacancies, it is the most we ever have had.”
