Find World Book Day costumes for free in Devon libraries

Libraries Unlimited is partnering with Recycle Devon to bring World Book Day costume swap rails to 15 libraries in Devon. World Book Day 2026 is Thursday, 5th March and library swap rails are running from 16th February to 8th March. Customers are invited to donate outgrown, unwanted children’s costumes in good, wearable condition. Costumes will be available to take home for free!

Grants available for Devon schools

Grants of between £5,000 and £10,000 are available for schools in Devon to develop creative and engaging learning experiences that will develop students skills in enterprise and innovation.

Devon County Council's Enterprise in Schools Grant (EiSG) programme is open to state funded and primary schools benefitting Year 6 pupils and above.

The grant scheme follows on from a pilot scheme launched at the beginning of the year which saw five Devon schools receive a programme of entrepreneurial learning activities.

Schoolchildren flock back to Farm Wise event

Based on the enormous success of last years ‘Farm wise’, Devon County Council farm tenants and primary school children will once again come together for an event designed to take children on the food journey from field to plate.

Approximately 1,400 children from nearly 30 primary and special schools from across Devon will attend the event on Tuesday 14 October, at the Westpoint Arena near Exeter.

Expansion plan for city primary

A £1.8 million expansion plan for an Exeter primary school is set to be given the go ahead next week.

The plan is for St Leonard’s C of E Primary School to expand from 420 children to 630 places by September next year.

This would entail the construction of a new single-storey, six classroom teaching block on the school site off Topsham Road.

Devon County Council’s Cabinet meets next Wednesday (8 October) to discuss the project which it is being recommended to approve.

An Exeter Junior School pupil shared one of the most amazing artefacts seen to date in the Junior School.

Dominic Manning brought in a copy of the memoirs of Queen Victoria, signed by the Queen herself in 1879!

Dominic's history teacher, Giles Ashman, said: "Not only was the signature absolutely remarkable but the children quite enjoyed hearing about Queen Victoria's travels around the country!"

South West Highways Ltd (SWH) were pleased to host a visit from a number of students studying at Bicton College at their head office in Rockbeare on Wednesday 17th September 2014.

The students, who suffer with mild to moderate learning difficulties, were aged between 18- 24 and accompanied by a number of teachers from the college. The students are all currently studying a ‘Pathway to Employment’ course, which seeks to prepare them for future employment, whilst building confidence and developing invaluable skills.

A prestigious new specialist school, designed to act as a regional centre of excellence for gifted young mathematicians, has been officially opened.

The Exeter Mathematics School, a sixth form school jointly sponsored by the University of Exeter and Exeter College, has been created to meet the needs of Maths students throughout the South West region.

An innovative programme bringing actors into classrooms across Devon to encourage and support children to make healthier choices on diet and exercise has been selected to feature in this week’s British Science Festival.

The Healthy Lifestyles Programme is being run by specialists from the University of Exeter Medical School and Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.

The programme sees Year 5 pupils work with a drama group who play the part of four characters: Snacky Sam, Disorganised Duncan, Active Amy and Football Freddie.

Chess success for Exeter School pupil Leif

An Exeter School pupil has proved he hasn’t forgotten the moves by taking part in three major competitions over the summer.

Year 8 pupil Leif Hafstad took part in the Gigafinal held in Reading in July qualifying for the Silver Plate South Competition which took place last weekend.

He also participated in the British Chess Championships in Wales at the beginning of August, scoring 3 out of 7 and the International Gibraltar Junior Chess Championships held in Gibraltar at the end of August, scoring 3.5 out of 6.
