Exwick Heights Pupils Receive Torbay and Devon Civic Award
Twenty-eight year 6 pupils from Exwick Heights Primary School in Exeter have received the Torbay and Devon Civic Award.
To achieve the award, pupils were required to demonstrate their involvement in school and community life, participation in hobbies and activities, support for charitable causes and action to help the environment.
Each pupil compiled a portfolio showcasing their achievements and contributions. During the assessment, they spoke about a wide range of activities, from sports, music and creative hobbies to volunteering, leadership roles in school and supporting community projects.
Many pupils highlighted environmental work, including litter picking, gardening, reducing food waste and promoting recycling, while others described fundraising for charities including Balloons Bereavement Support Services, the RSPCA and Cancer Research.
The 28 pupils were presented with their certificates at an official presentation ceremony, where the Chairs of Torbay and Devon Councils recognised their achievements.
The school, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, encourages pupils to take an active role in their school community and promotes values such as democracy and mutual respect through a School Council supported by Class Councils, ensuring every child has a voice in school life.
Mrs Gemma Wills, headteacher at Exwick Heights Primary School, said:
“We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils for achieving the Torbay and Devon Civic Award. Seeing them recognised at the presentation evening was a wonderful moment. They have shown real commitment to their school and wider community, and it has been brilliant to see the range of ways they contribute to others, both in and out of school. They are fantastic ambassadors for our school.”
Moira Marder, CEO of the Ted Wragg Trust, said:
“Our schools sit at the heart of their communities, and opportunities like this give pupils a real chance to make a difference both in school and beyond. The Civic Award helps them get involved in a wide range of activities that build confidence and a sense of responsibility. These pupils are a real credit to themselves and to Exwick Heights.”
