Westbank Community Health and Care has opened the doors of its warm, welcoming winter space for the communities of Exminster and Starcross, and is trialling a new shuttle service two days a week to help local people get there.

Warmwell at Westbank is within the charity’s recently revamped Community Hub and is open Monday - Friday from 10am for anyone seeking a welcoming, heated space during the daytime where they can share a cuppa and conversation during the colder months, including over the festive season. The Family Law Company is organising a quiz night at the stunning Exeter Historic Guildhall in the High Street on Thursday September 12. Teams of four are invited to sign up for the fundraiser in aid of Citizens Advice Exeter as part of its 80th anniversary celebrations.

A local disabled veteran from Exeter has raised £2,800 for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity through a swimming challenge at the Mercure Hotel in Exeter.

Tony Cox served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps for 5 years, but after leaving the service he suffered from complex health and mobility issues that took their toll on both his work and personal life.

On Friday 26th July, Tony completed a swim of 500 lengths, a total distance of 7.5 kilometres, for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Exeter hotel raises over £10k for the British Heart Foundation

Following an extensive refurbishment earlier this year, Jurys Inn Exeter took the opportunity to give back and donated used bedroom furniture to the British Heart Foundation. The furniture donations have raised an incredible £10,320 to help support the charity and fund vital heart research.

Generous buyers at Chilcotts most recent sale helped swell ongoing fundraising for Hospiscare to over £16,500.

Each sale day the auctioneers invite the Hospiscare team to take over the kitchen at the Silver Street Saleroom near Honiton Community College, to sell tea and coffee, snacks and cakes made freshly by Hospiscare volunteer Mary Bolshaw and her team, with every penny of profit kept by the charity.

Exeter group conquer Three Peaks Challenge for charity

A group of fundraisers from Exeter completed the National Three Peaks Challenge in 24 hours on Friday 12 July, to raise vital funds for charity Parkinson’s UK.

The group were inspired to take on the climbing challenge by a family member of one of the climbers, who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. They fundraised nearly £7,000 for the charity by completing the challenge.

Ide-based charity Organic Arts is seeking volunteer drivers to transport adults in a minibus between Exeter and its community garden project.

Volunteers need to spare one to two hours of time and be confident, competent drivers.

Garden sessions run on Wednesdays and Fridays 10.30am-3.30pm with the charity’s minibus used to collect and drop people off at Exeter city centre and Cowick Street.

Local charities and community groups are being encouraged to apply for funding of up to £20,000 from a pot worth over £3 million that has been raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

A wide range of community organisations, from registered charities, to community groups and social enterprises, can apply for grants of between £500 and £20,000. Applications are open from Wednesday 31 July for two weeks, until 14 August.
