Five years ago, Dan was homeless, living in supported accommodation, and struggling with addiction and mental health challenges.

This month — the same week The Salvation Army in Exeter Temple celebrates its 145th anniversary — Dan stood alongside Majors Carl and Elizabeth Di-Palma who lead the church and charity in Exeter, to watch celebrity chef Michael Caines (MBE DL), cut the ribbon on Café EX4, a community café run by people with lived experience of homelessness, addiction, and neurodiversity.

Kitsons raises £1,000 for Community Foundation

Leading Devon law firm Kitsons raised a fantastic £1,000 for Devon Community Foundation, thanks to their recent Christmas Quiz. The evening, which took place at the Grand Hotel in Torquay, saw 115 professionals from businesses across Torbay, Teignbridge and Exeter come together to take part in a gruelling eight-round quiz followed by a raffle. Businesses included Lloyds TSB, Bishop Fleming, Thomas Westcott, Pavey Group and Francis Clark.

Festive charity evening at Hembury Court

Robert and Mandy Persey, owners of East Devon’s award-winning Hembury Court, raised an outstanding £1,660 for Macmillan Cancer Support at their charity festive evening on Wednesday night (12th December).

Those who came along for the evening enjoyed a wonderful selection of goodies from local producers such as Fine Country Lifestyle, Georgie Porgie’s Puddings and Roly’s Fudge. Chiefs get their teeth into fundraising burgers!

Members of the Exeter Chiefs squad have already been showing their support to the Exeter Foundation, which is set to benefit every time someone tucks into a specially-made ‘Chiefs Burger’ at Urban Burger in the City Centre.

In a new incentive thought up by Urban Burger owner Garth and Melissa Pearse, the Foundation will benefit to the tune of 50p each time a customer orders the mouth-watering Chiefs Burger, which is made up of two 6oz prime Red Ruby Devon beef patties, bacon, fried onions, mayo and two slices of American cheese.

True to the sentiment that Christmas is the season of giving, generous traders of the Exeter Christmas Market have spared more than just a thought for the local community. Traders competed for the ‘Best Dressed Stall’ award for the opportunity to win the coveted title, and a sum of prize money to spend on loved ones this Christmas.

Santas furlong dash for Children’s Hospice South West

A one furlong festive fun run for Children’s Hospice South West will take place at Exeter Racecourse before its six-race card, which begins at 12.50pm on Thursday, 20th December. Anyone with a penchant for dressing up as Father Christmas and raising money for good causes is being urged to join in.

Free entry to the races, a Santa suit and a medal will be given to everyone who registers to run, jog or walk down the home straight for the charity, which offers care for children who have illnesses which mean they will dies before reaching adulthood.

Hospiscare's two city centre shops will both be open for late night shopping in the run-up to Christmas The stores, in Fore Street and Sidwell Street, will stay open until 8pm on Thursday nights and both will also be opening on Sundays. Fore Street, where there is a very popular vintage section in the basement, will open from 10am until 4pm and Sidwell Street, which is opposite John Lewis, from 10:30am until 4:30pm.
