Amy tackles huge challenge to thank FORCE

Twelve months ago, Amy Martin could barely run at all after a tough regime of cancer treatment.

But on Sunday May 24, she’ll be one of 440 people lining up as part of Team FORCE at Exeter’s Great West Run.

Amy aims to raise £1,000 for FORCE Cancer Charity to say thank you for all the support she has received from them since a diagnosis of breast cancer in late 2023.

An evening of Tango and Salsa dance organised by a local nurse has raised £2,000 for Hospiscare.

More than 60 dance enthusiasts attended the Latin dance event, held at Reed Hall, Exeter University, which featured dance demonstrations, lessons and a live tango orchestra.

The evening was organised by nurse Mo Ross in memory of her sister, Geraldine Privett, who received Hospiscare after being diagnosed with a terminal illness in 2012. Geraldine was a ward clerk at Whipton Hospital up until her illness started.

Special recognition for former WESC Student

Former WESC Foundation student, Ian Morrison, has been awarded the Charity Retail Associations national award for Best Young Volunteer of the Year following his contribution to the organisations charity shop in Heavitree, Exeter.

Ian, now 25 years old, received residential education and care at WESC since he was four years old and started volunteering for the organisation in March 2010.

Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital Staff Onesie Sleepwalk for Hospice

Staff from the Nuffield Heath Exeter Hospital have walked through the night to raise money for the Rowcroft Hospice in Torquay.

Business Development Coordinator Sophie Newbolt, Out Patient Services Manager Julie Chisholm, Ward Manager Sue Bore and Staff Nurse Alison Harbord entered the 15-mile Midnight Walk as the “Nuffield Onesies”.

They raised £500 for the hospice.

Julie said: “I worked at Rowcroft as a Senior Staff Nurse for ten years. It just seemed right to do this walk for them to support the excellent work they do.”

Merry Go Round Toy Libraries are looking to raise much needed funds when they take part in an abseil from the 20 metre tower at the new Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre tomorrow (Saturday 13 July).

The charity runs two toy libraries, Carousel at West Exe Children's Centre, and Merry Go Round at Exeter Scrapstore in Belmont Park.

City MP praises success of new social enterprise pilot project

Trainees on a pilot scheme to refurbish and re-sell bicycles in Exeter have been demonstrating their skills to MP and cycling enthusiast Ben Bradshaw.

The project, run by city charity Exeter Community Initiatives (ECI), is designed to give training and skills to the unemployed as well prevent unwanted bikes from being dumped in landfill.

Halfords teams up with charity to send unwanted second hand bikes to Africa

Halfords in the Exeter area are to take unwanted bikes off customers’ hands in an initiative to provide much-needed affordable transport for communities in Africa.

For six days, from Thursday 11 July to Tuesday 16 July, Britain’s biggest bike retailer is inviting customers to bring cycles currently lying abandoned in garages and garden sheds to any of its 460 stores.

Those donating bikes will be offered a 10% deal off the price of a brand new model as well as seeing their old two-wheeler go to a good cause.

Fundraisers at chartered accountants Francis Clark have handed over £4,000 to Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT) to buy a specialist piece of life-saving equipment.

Entries open for Estuary charity swim

Dust off the Speedos – the call is out for people to take to the water for the annual Topsham-Turf swim organised by the Estuary League of Friends.

This year’s event takes place on Saturday 17 August and covers the traditional mile-and-a-half course from Topsham Sailing Club to the Turf Hotel.

It is now eight years since the swim – a long-standing event in Topsham – was revived by Topsham ferryman Mike Stevens. Since 2005 it has been organised by Estuary League of Friends and now has support from Michelmores Solicitors.
