Taylor Wimpey Exeter raises over £5k for Hospiscare 

Colleagues from Taylor Wimpey Exeter have raised £5,316.42 for Hospiscare, an independent charity providing specialist care to patients and their families living with life-limiting illnesses across Exeter, central and east Devon.

The funds were raised as part of Taylor Wimpey’s annual challenge, where a team of 15 from the housebuilder’s Exeter office completed a hike along the north Devon coastline, followed by a series of competitive, creative and strategic tasks.

Hospiscare seeks volunteers to cheer on rugby lads

Local charity Hospiscare is appealing for volunteers to help out at the 2014 Men’s Walk in exchange for a pint, pasty and day of fun.

Hundreds of men have already signed up to take part in the rugby day out taking place on March 15.

The 10k walk, sponsored by Wilkinson Grant & Co, will lead the men from the Exeter Chiefs’ home ground, Sandy Park, onto a route going through Ludwell Valley Park before heading back to the finish line.

Charity volunteers clock up 26,000 hours

Wildlife charity volunteers have given more hours than ever before.

Volunteers at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park and Living Coasts in Torquay gave more than 26,000 hours during 2013 - equivalent to nearly 3 whole years, 155 weeks or more than 1,000 full days.

For the year ending in October 2013, 166 volunteers gave 26,074.5 hours – 1,932.25 more than in 2012.

Neighbouring businesses in Marsh Barton met at the Hospiscare Enterprise Centre (HEC) on January 14 for a cheque presentation after supporting the local charity’s 12 Days of Christmas campaign.

The 12 Days of Christmas saw eight businesses, from units surrounding the HEC on Trusham Road, come together to raise money for the charity on a chosen date between December 13 and 24. Two friends from Exeter, Suzanne Lovelace and Sadie Evans, landlady at The Royal Oak, St Thomas, are taking on the ‘Channel Challenge’ throughout February to raise money for local charity, Hospiscare.

The English Channel stretches 21 miles between Dover and Calais and the friends will be swimming the equivalent distance at local pool The Riverside, covering 1,408 lengths each.

Local fundraising efforts have been rewarded by Basepoint Exeter with a cheque for £2663 in match-funding. The money was raised for Balloons throughout November and December 2013, at local events including a Christmas Craft Fair, Charity Auction and a Bikers fundraising evening.

Two former professional rugby players have rowed more than 500,000 metres (310 miles) each in just over two weeks – as part of a challenge to raise money for charity. Sam Blythe and Shane Kingsland, who both played for Exeter Chiefs, want to row a million metres each as part of Janurow, which ends on January 31st. After starting on New Year’s Day they have been rowing every day and have now passed their halfway target of 500 kilometres.
