Exeter’s Guildhall Shopping Centre is making the city a safer place to shop with the help of the nation’s leading first aid charity.

The centre’s management team has purchased a portable Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs) – life saving equipment that can shock the heart to restart it after a cardiac arrest – from St John Ambulance.

And first aiders have been given training to ensure they can respond quickly in a life-threatening emergency.

“This is just one of several measures we have in place to ensure the safety and security of our customers, and we are...

The coffers of the Exeter Foundation have again been boosted by almost £2,000 following the success of the charity’s latest Sportsman’s Dinner held at Sandy Park last week (20 March).

Star attraction for the night was former Scotland and British Lions star Doddie Weir, who entertained the audience of nearly 200 people with a number of anecdotes from his playing days, as well as further amusing stories about his life away from the game.

Weir was also not afraid to have the odd joke or two at the expense of some of the audience members, including his former Borders team-mate...

Youth Speaks 2014-Summary

One of the highlights of the Rotary year is our annual "Youth Speaks" Competition in which local school teams compete for a chance to represent their schools and colleges in the national final later this year.

The standard in this year's competition was as high as it’s ever been. For any young person the chance to compete in a public speaking competition is a daunting and sometimes terrifying experience but even though only 2 teams went onto the District Finals, hopefully all students who took part will take away something positive from this experience. Next year we...

A Devon mum will be running her first marathon next month to raise much-needed funds for Rowcroft Hospice.

Tracey Granger, who works as a graduate legal executive within the Private Client team at the Newton Abbot office of WBW Solicitors, will be taking part in the London Marathon on April 13.

Tracey said: “I’ve run a few half marathons, but never a full one, so it’s going to be quite a challenge. Cancer is an illness which touches everybody’s lives in some way, so I am proud that all my sponsorship money will be going towards Rowcroft, which is such a valuable service for...

#Nomakeupselfie trend raises over 8 million for Cancer Research UK

Thanks to the #nomakeupselfie trend, and generosity of the public, £8 million was raised for Cancer Research UK in just six days.

The #nomakeupselfie trend isn’t something Cancer Research UK started. But last Tuesday, after people began tweeting their #nomakeupselfie pictures and asking how they could use them to make a difference to Cancer Research UK’s work, the charity posted a message on its Facebook and Twitter pages with information about how to support its work to beat cancer sooner. Since then, Cancer Research UK has received an unprecedented increase in the volume of...

Drama students from the University of Exeter bring the work of Exeter YMCA to life in theatre performance

For the last three months six students from the University of Exeter drama department have worked closely with Exeter YMCA. Dan, Ellie, Katy, Michael, Nikki and Tom (aka 'The Sleep Easy Clowns') first approach our charity in January to see if they could support our work through their 'clowning' genre of drama. This has been a very special time for us as the The Sleep Easy Clowns have inspired us, challenged us and made us laugh!

The first thing to say about The Sleep Easy Clowns is how much they have embedded themselves in the life of Exeter YMCA and become a...
