Have you ever wondered what happens behind the closed doors of a housing project for homeless young people? If so, you get the chance to see first hand as YMCA Exeter opens its door to the local community on Thursday 2nd October.

Based on Exeter’s St David’s Hill, yet working across Devon in areas including South Molton, Exmouth and of course Exeter, the YMCA provides a wide range of services for disadvantaged people, particularly young people. As well as supported accommodation for young, homeless people, they also run up to ten Job Clubs every week, help offenders address the reason behind their criminal behaviour both in Exeter prison and out in the community, and provide youth groups in and around the city.

‘YMCA Exeter is one of Devon’s best kept secrets!’ says Chief Executive Peter Stephenson. ‘Most people know we exist, but few have any idea the breadth and depth of the work we do to help people, particularly young people, to transform their lives and communities. Our annual Open Day aims to help local people understand what we do and to feel the passion we have for our work. It also gives opportunity for young people living in our housing projects the chance to tell their stories – I challenge anyone not to be moved by their courage and resilience’.

There are two sessions on the day when the doors will be open: noon-2pm and 6.30pm-8pm and you will get to meet with staff members as well as current residents.

These sessions will also showcase the work of the YMCA with presentations and refreshments and a buffet will be served at both. The Open Day will be hosted at 39-41 St David’s Hill, Exeter.

If you would like to attend please email lisa.smith@ymca.org.uk or alternatively ring 01392 410530 and ask for Bethan.
